Brilliant

Pretend by Jennifer Plecas is a wonderful story book about the wonder of imagination as well as a gentle reminder that parents need to play with their kids on their kids level. Children play and pretend all day as a method of learning as well as for the pure enjoyment of it. It's sad that so few parents (adults) allow themselves to pretend and thus lose the essence of our younger selves.

The reading level is 1st-2nd grade and the illustrations are soft, colorful, and child-like. This book has a vibe of simplicity and purity that elevates it from the rest of the competition for your money. Considering I got it at a budget overstock store (Ollie's) for about three bucks, the value is tremendous.

Put down the video control, the remote, the electronic device, turn the living room into a fantasy setting, and spend some true quality time with your child(ren). In case you forgot how to, this book is your manual. Highly recommended.

Reminder to Dad

This is a book a parent should read with their child. The child would love it, and it could lead the parent into remembering they need to let go and pretend once in a while. Parent and child would create memories for a lifetime. Parents need to think about what children remember most about their childhood. Did Dad or Mom play with them and pretend, or did they work all the time to get the "toys" the family thought they couldn't live without? Read this book to remember what is amazing about pretent. Great book to give new fathers and fathers that may need a gentle reminder what DADS do.

Pretend to perfection

This book is fantastic! The story of a boy wanting his dad to play with him and then the process of bringing dad out of dad's adult reality and into fantasy! I picked it up by chance in another brick and mortar bookstore, and was immediately taken in by it's sweet and adventurous spirit. The illustrations work wonderfully with the text. My 2 year old will be getting this book for Christmas this year!

Grandchildren and I love this Book! 13 pages featuring birds, 10 pages featuring mammals, and 7 pages with miscellaneous species

Every single illustration in this book is captivating. I love coloring in this book and it is a favorite with all of my school aged grandchildren, both boys and girls. The flowing, elegant, artistic, illustrations spark your creativity and draw children away from video games and TV.

I have to be honest, I saw the image of this coloring book and it Intrigued me, but I didn't have a clue about the title. What is Art Nouveau? Then I really wanted to know what type of animals were included in the Illustrations.

What is Art Nouveau? (I looked it up on line)

1. Art Nouveau (New Art) is a style of decorative art and design that was popular in the US from about 1890 until World War I and characterized by intricate linear designs and flowing curves based on natural forms.

The illustrations in this book feature patterns of animals(not mammals (see below) intertwined vines, flowers, and other plants.

What Animals are in the book?

2. I counted the pages and this book has 13 pages featuring birds, 10 pages featuring mammals, and 7 pages with miscellaneous other species as follows: 1 butterflies, 2 fish, 1 crayfish, 1 with frogs and dragon flies, 1 snails and butterflies, 1 with seahorse, shells and starfish and one with a bird, fish and frogs.

3. 31 Illustrations printed one per page ( the back of each page is blank) on heavy weight, bright white, perforated pages.
4. Details vary per illustration.
5. Use crayons, colored pencils, gel pens, or markers with this book. If your pens or markers leach through the page, just place a scrap piece of paper under the page you are coloring and leave the book open until dry.

6. Two fully colored pages are included on the inside covers to kick start your imagination. I have included those with other pictures to help you decide if this is just the right book for you.

My older grandchildren both boys and girls (age 8 and up) and I love this coloring book. The pictures are too detailed for my grandchildren to finish in one afternoon but the perforated pages allow me to easily remove the pages for the children to take home and finish.

Marty Noble does it again!

Adult coloring books are a wonderful way to escape from various aspects of our daily lives that can cause us stress. For me, I have a very ill mother (terminal cancer) who has been an artist all of her life, yet now her hands shake and short-term memory is problematic. Yet give her an adult coloring book (or two or three...), a firm top lap desk, several types of colored pencils and accessories and she is very happy to delve into the image for hours at a time while recovering from chemo treatments in her bed. Even I enjoy coloring these pages as Noble consistently produces images (many from famous works of art) that are simple to challenging when found in these coloring books. This book "Art Nouveau Animal Designs" is amazing particularly due to the details included within each image. When my mother's copy arrived today, I was so happy to see the joy on her face as many of the designs included magnificent birds (her favorite animal next to her real-life puppy). A few relatives were also here when I gave it to my mother and they expressed interest in having their own copy of this coloring book...all over the age of twenty! So coloring is not just for kids anymore! (PS: Hospice nurse also approved!)

NOT Just for Kids!

These Marty Noble books are a great hobbie for adults - it's fun to figure out what colors to use and how to do the shading and bringing the images to vivid life with bright colors. It demands serious concentration which makes it very relaxing as all thoughts have to leave your head so you can work on the complicated designs - it's almost a form of meditation. And, when you are done you have a beautiful drawing (I use colored pencils, my favorite medium), suitable for framing. These Art Nouveau Animal Designs are particularly lovely. Art Nouveau is French for "New Art," it was an art movement that brought nature into design (flowers, birds, all kinds of animals) and believed art should be part of everyone's everyday life. For instance, art should not just be something you go and see at a museum, your house and furniture should be artistically designed, the knives and forks you eat with should be artistically designed - that's why you can see art nouveau styled household objects like lamps and chairs, because we should all be living with art. Art Nouveau, and it's philosophy, later lead to the Arts & Crafts movement.

This is not a book to help you learn kinesiology. It is the history of how it came about. If you're in a kinesiology class and are actually learning movements, contractions, joints, muscles, etc. this book will NOT help you! Total waste of my money.

Great play, great electronic version

Othello was one of the first plays I was exposed to when I was younger. It has murder, suicide, intrigue and things that would get a teenager into Shakespeare.

I've had mixed success with some of the free Kindle versions of Shakespeare. Some have been good, some have been awful. This is an exceptional version. It's formatted nicely and is easy to read. The only "lack" is that it is without line numbers, so if you were to use this for academic reasons, you might have an issue or two.

Thus far, Othello's my favorite free Shakespeare play. I missed how much of a jerk Iago was, and all the deception that lead to Othello killing Desdemona.

If you've got a Kindle and want to read Shakespeare, then download this version.

Shakespeare's best Villain

Is there any other character in all of literature who is as calculatingly evil as Shakespeare's Iago? His jealousy over being passed over in favor of Cassio engenders a revengeful scheme that turns jealousy into a weapon used to destroy the noble Othello. Here innocence and trust is contrasted with pure manipulation and evil in what is one of Shakespeare's most revealing tragedies. The characters act exactly as they would be expected to based on the overriding quality that they represent. Othello is wonderful Shakespearean drama that ranks among his greatest works.

The Folger Library editions are my favorite. Each page has a facing page that explains obscure terms and helps as a handy reference to make reading the plays pleasurable and educational. These paperback editions of Shakespeare's works are a great value and fit in your pocket.

Really, if you enjoy Shakespeare's plays, then you'll enjoy Othello. The actual read-ability of this digital version is excellent, so I'd recommend it above other digital versions.

An introduction to fairy tales, folklore, and magic

This folk tale is unlike most of the storybooks that you'll find marketed towards children. It is much closer to the original grim fairy tales in that it has something of a sense of menace and danger about it, and also lacks the now-requisite happy ending.

It tells the story of a fisherman who earns the favor of a magic fish through his own good-heartedness. He has no thought of reward, but his wife convinces him to ask the fish to upgrade their hut to a house, which the fish seems happy to do. But then the wife continues to convince the fisherman to go ask the fish for upgrades, until she is Queen of the land and wants to be Queen of the Sun and the Stars.

Every time the fisherman goes to ask the fish for something else, the sea is stormier, although the fish says nothing. In the end, the fish decides that the wife has asked for too much, and takes away everything.

There is so much going on in this story that a child can enjoy it for years. The characters and their relationship to each other provide for an instructive discussion about why we do favors, and why we should be reasonable in our requests. It also tells us a lot about what it takes to be happy.

The repetitive nature of the plot should also be comforting to children.

I really recommend the 1967 edition, which was masterfully illustrated by Ed Arno. The pictures are done in blue and black, with a funky thick-line-drawing style which perfectly captures the mood of each page.

a classic tale retold

The Magic Fish is a classic fable of greed that all people (not just children!) should read and familiarize themselves with. An old fisherman and his crabby, demanding wife live by the sea. She demands that he go catch some fish, and the fisherman snags a bug-eyed, yellow talking magic fish. The Fish is really a prince, and the fisherman frees him. His wife, angry that he returned empty handed, demands that he go back and demand a pretty house from the fish. Her wish is granted.
One can see where this leads to: the wife continually demands more and more wonderful things for herself (is this where the term "fishwife" came from??) until the magic fish becomes angry and takes EVERYTHING back. The fisherman, who meanwhile didn't WANT to keep going back to the magic fish, was perfectly happy with what he already had.
"The Magic Fish" is a fable that we simply don't hear enough of these days, and I think it would be good if we heard it more often. Our culture is one where we are constantly encouraged to buy, buy, BUY and our spiritual wealth is often judged by our material wealth: more stuff = happiness. The tale of the magic fish, with it's stout, heavy illustrations by Pels, reminds us that sometimes what we HAVE is all that we NEED, and greed comes before a fall. Highly recommended for all ages.
