About the Author

Eileen Munro is Professor of Social Policy at the London School of Economics, London, UK. With a background in both philosophy and social work, her work has focused on the reasoning skills needed to provide an effective child protection service. The work was taken up by many child protection services in several countries but, in working with management and practitioners to improve risk assessment and decision making, she realised that the individual decision maker is strongly influenced by organizational and social factors that also need to be understood in order to reduce error. A powerful framework for doing this is provided by the systems approach to investigating error that was developed in aviation and has been adapted to medicine in the US and UK. Professor Munro then worked with the Social Care Institute for Excellence in the UK to adapt this approach to use in child protection services and it is now being adopted widely in England. At the request of the Secretary of State for Education, she undertook a review of child protection in England and published the final report in April 2011, followed by a progress report in May 2012.

Her extensive consultancy work with child protection services in higher-income countries as well as her academic work makes her well qualified to pull together an overview of the issues in child protection.

Unbelievable Plot!

Laura Golightly is traveling around Europe, the assistant to a romance writer. Finding her employer, Mamie Pendergast, a demanding and self-centered woman, Laura is forced to smooth things over with people they meet, time and time again. When Mamie's hotel reservations for her favorite suite are lost, they have to settle for another room. When a cat burglar creeps into their suite, Laura is determined to save Mamie's manuscript. When he steals a kiss instead, Laura finds herself falling in love, and also into danger!

This was silliest book I've read in a while. The plot wasn't remotely plausible, from the president of an airplane design company stooping to cat burglary, to the muddled plot twist involving stolen blueprints and terrorist organizations. I found the idea of the army allowing a civilian to lead the charge to save the kidnapped heroine rather ridiculous, though Caesar did look rather fetching clutching a semi-automatic rifle...

The art saved this book. With crisp, graceful lines, it held my attention much better than the lame plot. The panel layouts complimented the story, and Mayu Kasumi used large images every effectively. If for no other reason, flip through this book to enjoy the gorgeous artwork!

Silly and not really worth your time

Working as a live-in personal assistant for an author, Laura is awakened one night by the sound of someone breaking into their hotel suite. When she yells for help, the masked burglar kisses her to keep her quiet, then leaves. Who is he and what was he looking for?

Laura is a pretty but empty-headed, na�ve and self-deprecating - the most annoying kind of heroine(?). I picked this up because Madeleine Ker is the pseudonym of one of my favorite authors, Marius Gabriel. It was my first foray into graphic novels in which the book is read back to front, which made for an interesting experience but took some getting used to. Disappointingly, it confirmed my suspicion that pulp romance written by a talented author is still empty, unfulfilling, pulp romance, even when "printed in flirty pink ink!"

As a practicing lawyer who earns a living in the criminal courts, I found this book an excellent and informative guide to this often problematic area. The authors introduce the subject in a way that is easy for the beginner to comprehend, but at the same time include sufficient detail to answer many of the most pressing problems facing a defence team in court.

A great intro for the beginner

Having left behind my interest in genetics in order to pursue tax accountancy, I've always been fascinated by accounts of DNA typing. This book provides a wonderful introduction that is accessible to even the novice geneticist like myself. Much of the information Rudin and Inman give is quite practical; with some help from a friend who works in a medical lab I was able to set up my own electrophoresis gels and PCR. A word of caution to the amateur, however: make sure you practice before drawing any conclusions from the "evidence." My wife, Amy, wouldn't speak to me for a week after I claimed that a stain on our bed linen did not match my DNA. It turned out that she had spilled some ice cream.

I have a BS in genetics and biochemistry and am looking to enter into a forensics lab. This book is an EXCELLENT resource for an entry-level criminalist, criminal lawyer, or the non-scientist interested in this topic. It was organized from basic genetics to higher-level interpretation issues and included tons of diagrams, pictures, and relevant case studies. This book did an outstanding job explaining complicated and detailed subject matter in an easy to understand and interesting matter.

Great overview of family therapy - with weak editing

Griffin and Green do a nice job condensing down the essential concepts of the following family therapy models: Structural, Strategic, Behavioral, Psychoeducational, MRI, Object Relations, Bowenian and Experiential. Each theoretical model is presented in an overview format that highlights key terms and techniques, basic tenets, and variations of the model. In addition, the authors have provided a comprehensive self-test at the end of the book for the reader to assess their learning. Unfortunately, in the model comparison section, on page 124, the editor did not catch that the Bowenian key terms are listed under the Object Relations section, and that the Object Relation key terms are completely omitted. This error made me question the accuracy of the entire model comparison section. ...

An exceptionally rich blend of history and imagination

Night’s Templar is book thirteen in the inestimable “Vampire Queen series” by the incomparable Joey W. Hill. Ms. Hill’s writing always consumes the reader with rich characters, deep emotion and enthralling settings, but that she can sustain this particular series through so many books without compromising any of these elements is a testament to her skills, to these characters and to the world they inhabit.

What makes this book stand out, for this reader at least, are two elements in particular. While we have been given more than a glimpse into the Fae world in a previous instalment (Bound by the Vampire Queen), this is more an exploration of the quest by Vampire Lord Uthe and Fae Lord Keldwyn, as well as their evolving relationship. Both of these elements combine to further the interaction and cooperation between the two worlds. In so doing, the series is opened up to so many new elements and possibilities that it makes a series fan positively giddy with anticipation.

Second, and it is this I appreciate beyond measure, is the almost magical blending of history and legend, with the most imaginary of paranormal worlds. Uthe’s role as a Templar Knight and the quest with which he has been entrusted for nearly 900 years was slowly revealed in an engrossing weave into the fabric of time such that, for the duration of the story, it fit. Perfectly. Vividly. And oh so imaginatively. It was stunning how the small pieces of legend were enhanced when placed in this fantastical world, bringing them to almost tangible life.

Longstanding VQ fans will be able to get their ‘squee’-on with a liberal dose of familiar characters, deeper exposure to some newer favourites, and months of speculation as to who’s story is next. And the cache of possible characters just expanded exponentially. New readers will be clamouring for the backlist because no one can touch that place inside a book-lover that transforms escape into a momentary reality, quite the way Ms. Hill can.

Night’s Templar is quintessentially Vampire Queen, but the brilliant blend of the real, the legendary and the imagined takes this story to a new plane. Kudos for an exceptional, next-level read.

Definitely not your average leather-clad vampires...

If you want some really delicious M/M vampire erotica romance to read, let me recommend NIGHT'S TEMPLAR by Joey W. Hill. Her work is lyrical and romantic, yet there is an earthiness and darkness to it that makes it fascinating reading, beyond that often seen in erotic romance. I am utterly addicted to her VAMPIRE QUEEN series in particular, of which this is the latest chapter. I love the fact that Joey's use of BDSM gets to deeper levels than the kink club billionaire tropes that have become a little predictable of late. And if you've gotten a bit sick of vampires, you'll find Joey's universe a fresh take. Her vampires have a savage edge that definitely ups the suspense angle, without becoming unsympathetic psychos. I recommend them highly!

An Epic Story

Review: Night’s Templar by Joey W Hill
(Book #13, Vampire Queen Series)

One of the problems that occur in long running book series are that the storylines, characters and plots can start to become too familiar. Just insert character A into scene B and tie it all up with C’s ending. Not necessarily a bad thing if the writing is good, but sticking to what’s worked in the past can ultimately lead to a slow death for the series as a whole.
This is most definitely NOT the case with Joey W Hill’s latest book in her Vampire Queen series. Book 13 “Night’s Templar” is a revelation. Ms. Hill has taken the world she’s so beautifully created in Books 1-12 and expanded and enriched it tenfold. Weaving in Historical fact, legend and her own myths regarding the Knight Templars elevates this story to what is best in all great fiction. Immaculate storytelling.
Lord Uthe (high- ranking member of the Vampire Council) and Lord Keldwyn (Fae liaison between the Vampire and Fae worlds) have been at the top of fan lists for a story of their own since first meeting the characters in earlier books. That there is an attraction between them has been evident from the beginning. How two sexual Dominants come together in a way that is true to both their natures is the task at hand. The story that unfolds in Night’s Templar brings a depth and gravitas not only to these two characters but to the entire Vampire series as a whole.
As a former Templar Knight, Vampire Lord Uthe is a man who has dedicated his life to serving the needs of the Vampire race while still living as close to the Rule that dictated the day to day life of a Templar Knight. He accomplishes this without losing what is true to his Vampire nature. Honorable, Humble and Courageous, Uthe is a man determined to do what is asked of him, no matter the cost. A 900 year old promise and a secret that could end his life set him on a quest in the truest sense of the word.
High Fae Lord Keldwyn is the best ambassador for his people as liaison to the Vampire Council. Breathtakingly beautiful, quick-witted and a Master at negotiation, Keldwyn is a force of Nature. He is a larger than life personality, yet you never know where you stand with the man. What isn’t immediately evident is the fact that Kel is just as Honorable and Courageous as Uthe. (And no, I didn’t say Humble, but I will add self-assured)
Working together on the accord between their worlds, Uthe and Keldwyn find pleasure in debates, planning sessions and games of chess. The attraction between them unsettles Uthe, and intrigues Kel. Although sexually Dominant by nature, Uthe has limited his sexual interactions with his 3rd marked servant to the physical aspects only. To allow himself to engage on an emotional level that so many of his fellow Vampires have with their servants would go against his desire to live as closely to the tenets of his Templar beliefs as possible. That Keldwyn stirs such intense need in him, both sexually and emotionally, makes his task that much more difficult to accomplish… Especially when Kel insists on going with him.
As their journey together to fulfill Uthe’s promise takes them deeper into the Fae world, we are witness to their struggles to find meaning and connection in the feelings and desires they can no longer deny. Their sexual encounters peel back the layers on what lies deep within their hearts. Love, belonging, service and ownership are poignantly revealed to show how Dominance and submission can set our souls free and connect two hearts for eternity.
Along the way we meet up with favorite characters from other books in the series, as well as several new characters that open the world(s) of the Vampire Queen even more. No longer limited to Vampire, Fae and human, the number of Supernatural beings that are expanding this world just add an additional layer to a richly detailed place we’ve come to love. Take my advice, if you haven’t read one of Joey W Hill’s books before, run as fast as you can and grab yourself a copy of Night’s Templar. You won’t be disappointed.

Is Human Intelligence Inherited?

Professor Kamin presented convincing evidence to debunk the commonly held view that human intelligence (I.Q.) is to a large extent inherited. He did this by pointing out, in some cases, fallacious assumptions made by proponents of the hereditary theory and in other cases faulty research design and/or conduct of studies that purport to demonstrate that human I.Q. is mainly determined by inheritance.

Polemical, politicized and misleading

Kamin's books is widely cited (eg by Stephen Jay Gould) as a source for those wishing to 'debunk' the concept of IQ.

I had a good look at it but I did not find it useful because of the way it misleads the reader about the sources. For example, Henry Goddard's paper "MENTAL TESTS AND THE IMMIGRANT" in "The Journal of Delinquency" is supposed to have claimed that Jewish immigrants were mentally defective, based on IQ tests. What does the actual paper say?

"Our study therefore makes no attempt to determine the percentage of feeble-minded among immigrants in general or even of the special groups named - the Jews, Hungarians, Italians and Russians."

The whole book is as unreliable as this.

As a side note, thanks to people like Kamin and Gould , a lot of people are of the few that IQ is a discredited notion. Nothing could be further from the truth. Here is the official position of the American Psychological Association, the premier professional association in the field

"The findings of the task force state that IQ scores do have high predictive validity for individual (but not necessarily population) differences in school achievement.
