About the Author
Alex and Brett Harris founded TheRebelution.com at sixteen years old and co-authored two best-selling books by the age of twenty-one. You’ll find plenty of books written by forty-somethings who, like, totally understand what it’s like being a teenager. You’ll find a lot of cheap, throwaway books for teens, because young people today aren’t supposed to care much about books, or see any reason to keep them around. And you’ll find a wide selection of teen books where you never have to read anything twice–because it’s been dumbed down. Like, just for you.

What you’re holding in your hands right now is a challenging, hardcover book for teens by two teens who believe our generation is ready for something different. Ready for something that doesn’t promise you a whole new life if you’ll just buy the right brand of jeans or use the right kind of deodorant. We believe our generation of young people is ready to rethink what teens are capable of, and what the teen years are all about. And we’ve noticed that once some wrong ideas are debunked and cleared away, our generation is quick to choose a better way, even if it’s also more difficult.

Our teen years have been different than most, even radically so. We’re 19-year-old twin brothers, born and raised in Oregon, taught at home by our parents, and striving to follow Christ while making more than our share of mistakes. Strangely enough, we’ve also served as interns at the Supreme Court of Alabama at 16, as grassroots directors for four statewide political campaigns at 17, and as authors of the most popular Christian teen blog on the web at 18. We’ve spoken to thousands of teens and parents at our conferences in the United States and internationally and reached millions online.

Some might think our experiences would make us unable to relate to the average teenager. But that doesn’t really bother us because we don’t believe average teenagers exist. We’ve witnessed the ideas in this book transform “normal” teens into world-changers, and we’ve seen small handfuls of teens just like you accomplish incredible things when they’re willing to break the mold of what society says their capable of.

So the story starts with us, but it’s really not about us. It’s about something God is doing in the hearts and minds of our generation. We call it a teenage rebellion against low expectations. It’s an exciting movement that is changing the attitudes and actions of teens around the world. And we want you to be part of it.

This book explores a few simple but far-reaching questions:
• Is it possible that even though many teens today have more freedom than any other generation in history, we’re actually missing out on some of the best years of our lives?
• Is it possible that everything our culture tells us about the purpose and potential of the teen years is a lie, and that we are its victims?
• Is it possible that our teen years actually represent a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to accomplish something huge–both for ourselves and for our generation?
• And finally, what would our lives look like if we set out on a different path entirely–a path that required more effort but promised a lot more reward, and ultimately, a lot more fun?

We describe that alternative path with three simple words: Do Hard Things.

What We Don’t Mean
On the outskirts of a small town in Germany is the abbey of Dundelhoff. This small stone monastery is home to a particularly strict (and fictitious) sect of Dundress Monks who have each vowed to live a life of continual self-denial and discomfort.

Instead of wearing comfy t-shirts and well-worn jeans like most people, their clothing is either itchy shirts made from hair or painful chain mail worn directly over bare skin. Instead of a soft mattress, plush pillows, and warm blankets they choose to sleep on the cold stone floors of the abbey with not so much as a towel. You might remember reading somewhere that monks are fabulous cooks? Well, that might be true generally, but not about these monks. They eat colorless, tasteless sludge once a day. They drink only lukewarm water.

We could go on, but you get the picture. No matter what decision they face, Dundress Monks will always choose the more difficult option–the one that provides the least physical comfort, the least appeal, the least fun. Why? Because they believe that the more miserable they are, the holier they are; and the holier they are, the happier God is.

Which makes these miserable monks the poster boys for Do Hard Things. Right?

Wrong!

If you’re like most people, your first reaction to the idea of “do hard things” is something along the lines of, “Hard…,” you think nervously. “Guys, I might need to be somewhere else right about now.”

We understand your reaction. But we’re not undercover monks plotting to make your life miserable. We’re not recommending that you do just anything that’s hard. For example, we’re not telling you to rob a bank, jump off a cliff, climb Half Dome with your bare hands, or stand on your head for 24 hours straight. And we’re certainly not telling you to work harder so you can earn God’s favor.

But here’s what we are doing. We are challenging our peers to grab hold of a much better option than what the world is offering. It’s an option that has somehow gotten lost in our culture and most people don’t even know it. But we don’t just want to tell you, we want to show you. In the pages ahead you’re going to meet young people just like you who have rediscovered this better way–to reach higher, dream bigger, grow stronger, love and honor God, live with more joy–and quit wasting their lives.

That’s the short version of what we mean by doing hard things.

Don’t think of this book as a collection of nice opinions. Think of it more as an invitation to a revolution you don’t want to miss. In Do Hard Things, we not only say there is a better way to do the teen years, we show you how we and thousands of other teens are doing it right now–and how you can as well.

Teens are amazing and capable.

Amazing. A great way to look at things.

I have always enjoyed Teenagers. I used to teach middle school and the preteen age is just amazing. They feel they can do great things and they are on the cusp of being ready to change teh world. They have the energy and desire and time to make the world a better place. They are able to look at some of the ridiculous situations in the world and point them out to the rest of us.

This book is for those kids and their parents. Do hard things. Use your energy and your beliefs and your time to make a difference. Help the candidate that you like run for office, find a problem and fix it. Change the world. This book encourages teens to stretch themselves and grow and make a difference.

This book also encourages parents to let the teens do hard things. Doing things that are hard to them encourages them to grow into amazing adults.

I bought a copy for both of my teen age children and myself. More people should read this book.

Best read with the group study

This book really gets teens excited about owning not just their faith but their future as a whole. I have seen students be stifled by adults who don't think teens can do big things, this book gives them the motivation and tools to go and do things many would tell them they can't do. Best read with the group study, just try it and see what the students come up with.

I don't mean to have a dig, but this book is so much more superior to any emerging church book written, and it is written by teenagers.

Alex and Brett Harris discuss the issue of low expectations which are not just laid upon teens but is accepted by teens and teen culture of play and fun. For the Harris' enough is enough. They want to blow away the notion that teens are unable to understand anything complex or important - that they can't do things which is vital, or make a difference. The Harris', who have clerked for a supreme court have show that not only is it good to have higher expectations, but that it is biblical.

They write on page 50 "We are convinced that the teen years are the primary time God has given to us for strict training....Prov 20:29, "The glory of young men is their strength."

The book is very challenging - they ask questions such as "Are we doing things now that will equip us for the greater things God may have for us to do? These are the fundamental questions for this season of our lives."
And the bulk of the book focus upon the five different kinds of hard things which they encourage teens to do:

1. Things that are outside your comfort zone
2. Things that go beyond what is expected or required
3. Things that are too big to accomplish alone
4. Things that don't earn immediate pay off
5. Things that challenge the cultural norm

Let me end with a quote from them:

"We've noticed that the fence that keeps us from breaking out of our comfort zones is nearly always built of fear - fear of weakness, discomfort, failure, humiliation. We've noticed something else too: you can't live by fear and live by faith at the same time. As Paul wrote in 2 TIm 1:7 "God did not give us a spirit of timidity but a spirit of power, of love and of self discipline." And when we read the Bible heros who accomplished big, hard things for God, we discover the main job requirement: "Without faith it is impossible to please God." (Hebrews 11:6)."

This is a book which we will give to every member of our youth ministry!

Wonderful insights!

Excellent book which takes a figure we all recognize and a principle we can all use and ties them together in an easy, understandable way. Just about everyone alive knows who Steve Jobs is and what a visionary he was. Many are just learning about a "new" concept called the Law of Attraction. Using examples from her own life and that of Steve Jobs, the author has illustrated and explained the Law of Attractive perfectly. We're all connected to that same energy stream that Jobs and so many others are adept at accessing. This book makes the reader feel like we can do anything we put our mind to......and we CAN! Highly recommended!

Brings Steve Jobs to Life in a subtly fresh new way!!

What a Brilliant Title!!!! Reading this from start to finish is a journey of drawing direct and specific parallels between Steve Jobs and I. You know when you read a book and you can't put your highlighter down because almost every thing you read resonates in a deep place of knowing?

This book offers to me a greater tangible understanding of defining who I really am, illustrating so well how my creativity, thoughts and ideas merge with the whole as I directly contribute to the collective motion forward in this vast universe.

It depicts so beautifully the role that meditation plays, where quieting the mind allows more subtle things to be perceived by Steve Jobs and I. It inspires my spiritual thinking about my relationship with my non-physical using such vivid imagery.

This book connects me to the Author Cristina Corban, to Steve Jobs, to the vision inside of me that is awaiting to be awakened and manifested and most importantly, to All that IS. It leaves me knowing on a deeper level that both Steve Jobs and I are more than meets the eye.

A simple way to learn the script

I am really enjoying learning the script through these copybooks even though it is so simple. It takes me back to my school days when we practiced cursive, which I thoroughly looked forward at the time.

I wanted to address something that a number of people had commented on regarding the quality of the paper. I am using a fine mechanical pencil for practicing the strokes in the copybooks. The purpose of the practices in these books is to create the hand/ brain connection: for you to get the feel of making the movements.

It is not necessary to use pen and ink, and in fact, I think that it is distracting as you would be trying to master two things at once. For that reason my suggestion is to use a mechanical pencil that is fine ( it will stay "sharp" like a nib pen ) and focus on getting the form down. If you feel excited to try pen and ink, you can certainly do that with the appropriate paper as a separate exercise.

My second suggestion is to skip the first row on each page of the copybook. Start on the second row and continue to the end moving along in a fluid relaxed manor. (Preferably in one sitting). Then when you get to the end of the page, go back and complete your practice on the first row. It is fun to see how far you have come by comparing the second row (your first practice row) and your first row (your last practice row), and also see how close you are the the sample row above.

It is reassuring to see how, when I worked in a relaxed way, there was a lot of improvement from first to last. My hand did begin to get the "feel" of the movements!

An excellent manual for writing and the correct way of holding pens

This is an excellent course in elegant nineteenth century longhand. I also brought the theory book. I am an artist by profession and I wanted to learn the beautiful script of the nineteenth century, but I immediately noticed that the different way you are taught to hold the pen made it, while more difficult, far more easy to control and manipulate your pen.
I decided to completely change the way I hold my writing/drawing pens and to adopt this manner for all my work. This is hard and causes my hand to cramp up now and then but it is worth the effort. Maybe the Spencerian manner of holding a pen is of even greater importance than the writing!

The covers contain extra instructions, also that you are meant to use these books with pencil. The paper will bleed through with fountain pens.

I think that one needs a lot more practice anyway than just the booklets give you space and I find some letters more difficult than others so devote more pages to them. So I have brought the Clairefontaine french ruled exercise books. Look for the wire bound larger books, I found sellers with really good deals on the net. Clairefontaine paper is made for fountain pens and is a joy to use. It makes your writing easier too, to have proper paper. The French ruling is the perfect help.

I am really enjoying the books, I am half way now, and my ''normal'' handwriting has improved noticeably.

Another thing I really liked, and I don't know if it was in the theory book or in the instruction books, but in the end, after you mastered the lines and letters, you are free to develop further into our own style.

To make the beautiful thick/thin lines you will need a flexible fountain pen, or a dip pen with flexible nib. A ''calligraphy'' nib will not give you the right effect and will not teach you the difference in pressure needed. That means a vintage pen or a very expensive modern gold flexible nib fountain pen, or, the only affordable modern flexible nib fountain pen: the ''Noodler's Ahab''. (this is a pen for people who like to fiddle with their pens). I love it, use it for sketching too as the difference in pressure and line is an important part of my style. I prefer the Ahab now for sketching as a flexible dip pen (besides the need for an inkwell and constant dipping), tends to snag very easily unless you have very smooth paper, which means you'd have to make your own sketchbooks. And the same goes for writing obviously.

If you want to learn beautiful elegant longhand and learn a superior way of holding pens, I wholeheartedly recommend these books.

Keep at it!

I bought this handwriting set after a handwritten letter to my grandmother looked so awful that I was almost ashamed to put it in the mail. Completing the set takes time and patience, but if you stick with it, the results are absolutely worth it. Rather than having to learn both a new pen and a new handwriting style at the same time, I completed these books using cheap ballpoints, but now that I have the muscle memory to shape each letter, transitioning to nicer fountain pens is much easier.

The set starts by having you practice individual lowercase letters, the capitals, short groups of letters, and finally whole phrases. Although at first you have to go quite slowly to form each letter correctly, by the time you get into Book 5, your writing speed is pretty close to "normal." I actually found it quite therapeutic practicing each movement in repetition.

And OH the difference! I get compliments on my handwriting ALL the time now, both from people who know me and from complete strangers. I also find that I get a lot of enjoyment out of practicing it as well. I have the best written grocery lists and to do lists on the planet, because writing is nerdily-fun now. I get requests from people to address envelopes for them because "your handwriting is just so pretty." This set is totally worth the investment, both in time and money. If you stick with it, your handwriting WILL become something to be proud of.

Wonderful book but not for beginner.

This book goes into wonderful details about DNA and coupling to that are experiments to talk about how those discoveries were made. There are a lot of informations to which the reader must memorize to be a dedicated scientist. If the reader does not have a mature and analytical/reasoning skills, then all the informations will be gibberish. The reader also much have a basic understanding of chemistry and biology to understand the informations. If the reader is in high school and is taking Honor/AP biology then the informations will be clear cut. Some abbreviation are used and will not be told to what it stand for. Ex: the book used "bp" (it does not mean blood pressure), this refers to as "Base Pairs". The book did not provide "Base Pairs" so the reader must be able to reason it out base on the context and how bp was used. Over all comment on this book is IT'S AWESOME!!!!

My High School Textbook

This was used for my high school semester course "DNA Sci part 1" textbook used with Watson's Recombinant DNA textbook. DNA Science:A 1st Course, 2nd edi was useful in supplementing the updates in recent genetic advances and some newer, better graphic representations. I found this to be an easy textbook to read, although not intended for those without a biology and chemistry background since the book does not waste much ink on describing what should have already been learned. The other students in my class seemed to find this book to be a clear, understandable textbook as well.

A very good first course textbook that keeps a student (or any person) interested. Nice big, clear print as well. The laboratories were the standard same as in the Recombinant DNA textbook.

About the Author
Das Goravani was born Richard Edward Wurst in 1960 in Oakland California. Although raised Irish Catholic, and he considered entering the Seminary to become a priest, he instead took interest in the Indian Vaisnava Religion at the age of 19, and devoted much of his life to its Astrological Science. Teaching himself computer programming in the 1980s, he realized the potential for this emerging technology to make Astrology accessible to the public at large. He created one of the first, and best loved Jyotish programs: Goravani Jyotish.

Useful, but needs significant improvements!

This is a useful book, but it could have been enhanced with references to the primary sources (the sources have not been mentioned at all!) and some explanatory notes, particularly on contradictory significations attributed to the same house, sign, or planet.

I returned this book shortly after receiving it. I felt it was organized in a way that made it very difficult to use. There was no explanation of the planetary indications just lists of items that may be associated and it lacked a cohesiveness. I could not picture myself referring to it as a resource, so I returned it.
