One of The Best Gifts an Entrepreneur Can Receive!

First a qualifier, I have only gone through the first 3 chapters, but that is because I have already read them multiple times! I have purchased the Audible version and Kindle version.

The author Dawn Fotopulos breaks down the financial statements of business into recognizable everyday language of an automobile dashboard. One of the greatest strengths of The United States today is our entrepreneurial spirit. Combined with the unprecidented lower barriers of entry that allow competition, this is the Era of the Startup. Spiderman’s Uncle said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” This is very true with the leverage and capital this Startup Movement has created.

As Entrepreneurs we are building jets (Launching Companies), carrying cargo (product) & passengers (customers/employees), blasting into the stratosphere for the entire world to see on Facebook, Twitter, etc. And for me personally, having just enough information and understanding to be extremely dangerous. The simple and proper perspective Dawn brings, I believe is training me for understanding to be an effective operator as a business leader. This is done without trying to turn me into a bookkeeper, accountant, or CPA.

My personal story and history has been, I believe, a typical one for the entrepreneurial personalities out there. Excellent product and people person. Natural salesman. Passionate with a vision, having the ability to communicate the destination. All these qualities people would celebrate as a leader. The great danger for startups and entrepreneurs is this. We are taking this long journey into the wilderness without the knowledge of how to read our basic instruments. Fear takes over and discouragement is encountered by well meaning colleagues who are naturally “Number Guys/Gals”. Fighting to survive day to day naturally leads to focusing on activities that “Generate Money.” Selling more, Marketing better, Buidling more.

I’ve read books on Quickbooks, Bookkeeping, signed up for online services, Stewardship seminars, and have even gone to counselling because of the stress and pressure I’ve placed on myself. All these activities have aspects of help and assistance, but none have communicated to me the way this book does.

Accounting for the Numberphobic: A Survival Guide for Small Business Owners takes the monster of Financial Statements and transforms it to the tools that they are designed to be. Spedometer, Fuel Guage and Oil Pressure. The boogeyman has no teeth and no more claws.
The excitement I am beginning to feel with each chapter of this book is nothing short of a miracle for me personally. Without guilt or shame, I am facing my fears of “The Numbers” and taking my knowledge from being merely intuitional guessing to a thoughtful methodical creative process.
Gone are the days of “Googling” accounting terms and figuring it out myself.

I thank God for Dawn Fotopulos and the work she put into this book

This book should be required reading for business majors and entrepreneurs.

I wished I knew about this book when I started my computer repair business. Even though I've been in business for 12 years, I still learned a great deal.

It was a great read. The book addresses many of the universal concerns solopreneurs and small businesses owners have when starting or maintaining a business. Many of these solutions, the author provides, are very easy to implement and are very practical.

The author truly explains all the accounting in lay terms. In other words, you do not have to have a business degree to understand the book. More importantly, she shows you how to do the math for yourself.

Below are just a sampling of questions she answers in the book:

1. Am I charging enough for my products/services?
2. How do I keep a good cash flow going, especially when I have to invoice my customers?
3. Am I making an enough profit on a given product/service to cover my expenses?
4. Am I making a profit on a given customer to cover my expenses?

As a reminder, she shows you how to do the math on the above questions. This is important for any business, because you, as the business owner, can make informed decisions about the services, products and customers your business works with.

The only downside to the book is not having the same amount of information for service based businesses as product based businesses. Nevertheless, there is still a great deal of information that is applicable to both types of businesses.

My Professors Struggled to Teach Me Accounting...

A must read for anyone considering an MBA degree, taking an accounting class, or graduating from high school, college, or a graduate degree. Having always struggled with accounting and finance through undergrad and my MBA I never felt like I would be able to understand the numbers of my business (or anyone else's for that matter!). After every finance and accounting class I took, I felt defeated and only marginally more knowledgeable. It was clear to me that everyone needs to be able to understand the fundamentals of their finances - in life and in business - but that I might never feel confident about how to calculate or understand mine. Having read Accounting for the Numberphobic I feel like a new businessperson! I've never felt more comfortable watching Shark Tank and discussing an entrepreneurs financial situation, asked such insightful questions, nor been able to explain an accounting concept better. What I've learned is that it's not that I'm Numberphobic, it's that I never understood the numbers that were in front of me... until now! Thank you, Dawn!

A contemporary circle of hell -- but the chronicler is no Dante

Desiring to learn about the drug wars in Mexico, I bought this book somewhat as a blind shot in the dark. Like most blind shots in the dark, it missed the mark.

THE LAST NARCO refers to Joaquin Guzman Loera, a/k/a El Chapo. (Actually, the title seems to be somewhat misleading; while Chapo may be the last operating "El Jefe de jefes" ("Boss of bosses") still at large, if "narco" is given its common meaning of someone associated with the drug trade, clearly there are tens of thousands of narcos, with the number growing daily.) "Forbes" Magazine has listed Chapo both as one of the richest people in the world and one of the most powerful. Chapo is the book's centerpiece, around which Malcolm Beith, a British journalist, reports on the rampant drug trafficking, the narcos, the corruption, and the murder and mayhem over the last quarter century in Mexico.

By and large, the book is anecdotal. From time to time Beith wanders into the realms of analysis and policy, but never in sustained fashion or with particular enlightenment. What, one might wonder, has been the role of the United States? Beith mentions, more or less in passing, its role as the overriding market demand for the drugs coming out of and through Mexico (Ross Perot's sucking sound heading the opposite direction). From several of his anecdotes, one might speculate that U.S. intervention at both the levels of law enforcement and national diplomacy has affected - perhaps for good or perhaps for ill - Mexico's handling of its drug problem, but the matter is not really discussed. Beith also mentions, again without in-depth discussion, that the U.S. is the major supplier (perhaps as high as 90%) of the firearms used by Mexico's drug cartels and their sicarios (killers). Beith does NOT mention the possible contributing effect of NAFTA - which made trade, and hence smuggling, much easier and the result of which was that cheap and highly subsidized American corn devastated small-scale farming in Mexico, forcing over two million Mexican farmers to look elsewhere for a livelihood (namely, to the informal economy and to producing drugs).

Instead, the book basically consists of a litany of narcos, violence, and corruption. That no doubt is of some educational value. But even on this score, THE LAST NARCO is far from ideal. The writing partakes far too much of pop journalism (any article in "Rolling Stone" is much better written), and the organization of the book is indifferent at best. Moreover, the publisher must answer for a few conspicuous, sloppy mistakes, such as the same sentence ending one paragraph and beginning the next paragraph.

Bottom line: I am still in the market for a good book on the drug wars in Mexico. Any recommendations would be welcome.

Good book for people that are not from Mexico

I enjoyed reading this book, partly because even tough I live in Mexico, the web of names is just endless, PGR, AFI, different ranks in the mafia, so basically I finally understood all the relationships. Of course all the comments, and events that the author describes on his book are very familiar in Mexico, so anyone from Mexico, would easily identify this from the news and have his own opinion on the matter.

Even tough the author is (in my opinion) sometimes impartial, he did a lot of emphasis on the network of corruption in Mexico because the drug is moved from Colombia to the states. If so, how come he never questioned the integrity of the USA, because all those TONS for cocaine and mariguana, that cross in San Diego, Nogales, El Paso, etc... are not magically appearing on New York, Boston, etc... are they?

I do recommend this book, is a pretty good lecture, and it helps to better understand that underworld.

A very didactic reading.

I've been following what it's happening in Mexico with all the violence and the struggles for power, and this was the 1st book I read about it. I must say that it was very entertaining and I learned quite a lot about the history of "narcotrafico" and El Chapo Guzman. I enjoyed this book, and it inspired me to keep reading other books about this topic.

Symbols Made Us Human

A symbol is a pictorial device that evokes a concept in its entirety. It bypasses the intellect and talks straight to the heart. Our intellect analyzes, but our heart synthesizes. So a symbol evokes understanding without needing to convey verbal information.

Around 120,000 years ago, a new species of primate appeared in Africa. Its scientific name is Homo sapiens, but we know this creature as the modern human. When this species appeared on the earth, there were already other similar but more widespread species of humanoid apes, such as the Neanderthals. Yet the Homo sapiens were different. They were different because they could tap into the mystic power of understanding that is inherent in symbols. Symbols have helped humans develop a unique form of consciousness that no other animal has.

All the races of humans are much more closely related than most of us realize. You might be even more surprised to know how closely we are related our primate cousins, the African apes. Our genes are about 98 percent identical to those of an ape, and we share large chunks of our DNA sequence with all other life forms on the earth, even bacteria.

All humans are descended from a single female that lived in Africa less than 200,000 years ago. She is popularly called “Mitochondrial Eve.”2 As geneticist Bryan Sykes puts it: “‘Mitochondrial Eve’ … lies at the root of all the maternal ancestries of every one of the six billion people in the world. We are all her direct maternal descendants.”3 Our common maternal ancestor lived only a few thousand generations ago. And her earliest descendants drew the first symbols and tapped into their power.

In the following chapters, you will learn about the power of these symbols, the history of their interaction with humans, and how humans’ differential advantage came about because they evolved a type of brain that benefits from a direct relationship with the symbols. This symbiotic relationship began during our early evolutionary history and continues to influence our development in ways most of us are often unaware of.

There is, however, a secret group of specialists who have spent the last 500 years working with these symbols. They learned how symbols can advance the human condition by enabling us to share understanding. This group is the Freemasons, and their declared purpose is to study and understand symbols.

Ask any Freemason the question What is Freemasonry? and you will get this answer: a peculiar system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols. For 500 years, Freemasons have used a system of allegorical ritual and exposure to the mystic power of symbols to sensitize their members to the life-changing power these symbols have. Freemasons continue to experience the deep understanding that symbols can inspire and their power to change the way humans develop.

When humans were first exposed to symbols’ mystic power, they changed from brute animals into human beings in a way we still struggle to understand. James Shreeve, a well-known anthropologist, sums up the puzzle presented by this abrupt change:

“Human beings—modern humans, Homo sapiens—are behaviorally far, far away from being “just another animal.” The mystery is where, how, and why this change took place. … An “all-important transition” did occur, but it happened so close to the present moment that we are still reeling from it. … Something happened that turned a passably precocious animal into a human being.”

Anthropology records how and when this change happened but offers no explanation. It is my contention that humanity came into contact with a powerful force outside itself that has interacted with our collective mind ever since. This force is carried and communicated by symbols. In later chapters, we will discover that symbols are part of a great cosmic language that transmits deep understanding about the secrets of the universe.

A good foundational study text on Masonic Symbolism!

This wonderful book on Masonic symbolism is full of drawings and pictures of Masonic symbols which compliment the written text. The Author is convinced Freemasonry is essentially a spiritual quest and practice. So care should be taken to realize that our good Brother, Robert Lomas, speaks only for himself regarding his opinion of what Masonry means and that it is not in the power of any one individual Freemason no matter how many, so called, High Degrees he may have, to speak for the whole Masonic fraternity or individual Master Masons regarding what Masonry means. Each individual Master Mason must ultimately work out the meaning of Freemasonry for himself. Good Brothers such as Robert Lomas provide guidance and mentorship for their Masonic Brethren. Now, with this truth in mind we can readily enjoy the contents of this book and the opinions of it's author.

Some of the contents include: "The hidden influence of Ancient Symbols", "Why symbols are more powerful than words", "The power of symbols on the human brain", "Masonic symbols that changed the U.S. constitution", and "How symbols created Freemasonry." Toward the end of the book is a description of all the most ritually important symbols found within the "Blue Lodges" of American and British Freemasonry followed by the author's own personal commentaries.

For example, speaking personally about "The Compasses", Bro. Lomas writes; "The compasses, which rest on the volume of the sacred law, represent the divine principle issued by the Great Architect, which is to be manifested in both the cosmos and in the individual, allowing both to function and be understood in accordance with the laws that govern the universe. The compasses symbolize the range of a discerning mind and it's ability to measure a Mason's spirit. Along with the square of bodily form, which is used to try and prove the soul, the compasses delineate the shape of a living stone fit to be used in the cosmic temple."

This book presents a unique take on Masonic symbolism from a Masonic Brother's perspective and has my full recommendation. Enuff said.

Anthony Walker BBS, MSc, PhD, FRICS, holds the title of Professor Emeritus in Real Estate and Construction at the University of Hong Kong, where he has been engaged in teaching and research since 1985, prior to which he held academic appointments in the United Kingdom. He is a chartered surveyor and has worked in Britain, the Middle East and the Far East.
