Preface

This text has evolved from a need for a single volume that embraces a wide range of topics in fluid mechanics. The material consists of two parts — four chapters on macroscopic or relatively large-scale phenomena, followed by eight chapters on microscopic or relatively small-scale phenomena.

Throughout, we have tried to keep in mind topics of industrial importance to the chemical engineer.

Part I—Macroscopic fluid mechanics. Chapter 1 is concerned with basic fluid concepts and definitions, and also a discussion of hydrostatics. Chapter 2 covers the three basic rate laws, in the form of mass, energy, and momentum balances. Chapters 3 and 4 deal with fluid flow through pipes and other types of chemical engineering equipment, respectively.

Part II—Microscopic fluid mechanics. Chapter 5 is concerned with the fundamental operations of vector analysis and the development of the basic differential equations that govern fluid flow in general. Chapter 6 presents several examples that show how these basic equations can be solved to give solutions to representative problems in which viscosity is important, including polymer-processing, in rectangular, cylindrical, and spherical coordinates. Chapter 7 treats the broad class of inviscid flow problems known as irrotational flows; the theory also applies to flow in porous media, of importance in petroleum production and the underground storage of natural gas. Chapter 8 analyzes two-dimensional flows in which there is a preferred orientation to the velocity, which occurs in situations such as boundary layers, lubrication, calendering, and thin films. Turbulence and analogies between momentum and energy transport are treated in Chapter 9. Bubble motion, two-phase flow in horizontal and vertical pipes, and fluidization — including the motion of bubbles in fluidized beds — are discussed in Chapter 10. Chapter 11 introduces the concept of non-Newtonian fluids. Finally, Chapter 12 discusses the Matlab PDE Toolbox as an instrument for the numerical solution of problems in fluid mechanics.

In our experience, an undergraduate fluid mechanics course can be based on Part I plus selected parts of Part II. And a graduate course can be based on essentially the whole of Part II, supplemented perhaps by additional material on topics such as approximate methods, stability, and computational fluid mechanics.

There is an average of about five completely worked examples in each chapter. The numerous end-of-chapter problems have been classified roughly as easy (E), moderate (M), or difficult (D). Also, the University of Cambridge has very kindly given permission — graciously endorsed by Prof. J.F. Davidson, F.R.S. — for several of their chemical engineering examination problems to be reproduced in original or modified form, and these have been given the additional designation of “(C).”

The text was composed on a Power Macintosh 8600/200 computer using the TeXtures “typesetting” program. Eleven-point type was used for the majority of the text. Most of the figures were constructed using the MacDraw Pro, Claris-CAD, Excel, and Kaleidagraph applications.

Professor Fox, to whom this book is dedicated, was a Cambridge engineering graduate who worked from 1933—1937 at Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd., Billingham, Yorkshire. Returning to Cambridge, he taught engineering from 1937—1946 before being selected to lead the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge during its formative years after the end of World War II. As a scholar and a gentleman, Fox was a shy but exceptionally brilliant person who had great insight into what was important and who quickly brought the department to a preeminent position. He succeeded in combining an industrial perspective with intellectual rigor. Fox relinquished the leadership of the department in 1959, after he had secured a permanent new building for it (carefully designed in part by himself) before his untimely death in 1964.

Fox was instrumental in bringing Kenneth Denbigh, John Davidson, Peter Danckwerts and others into the department. Danckwerts subsequently wrote an appreciation (P.V. Danckwerts, “Chemical Engineering Comes to Cambridge,” The Cambridge Review, pp. 53—55, 28 February 1983) of Fox's talents, saying, with almost complete accuracy: “Fox instigated no research and published nothing.” How times have changed — today, unless he were known personally, his resume would probably be cast aside and he would stand little chance of being hired, let alone of receiving tenure! However, his lectures, meticulously written handouts, enthusiasm, genius, and friendship were a great inspiration to me, and I have much pleasure in acknowledging his impact on my career.

About the Author

James O. Wilkes is Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan, where he served as department chairman and assistant dean for admissions. From 1989 to 1992, he was an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor. Wilkes coauthored Applied Numerical Methods (Wiley, 1969) and Digital Computing and Numerical Methods (Wiley, 1973). He received his bachelor s degree from the University of Cambridge and his M.S. and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan. His research interests involve numerical methods for solving a wide variety of engineering problems.

This book is concise,clear and easy to understand.

I have a good chance to study this course with Prof. Wilkes at Petroleum and petrochemical college, Chulalonkorn University in Thailand. This book is very useful for me because it's easy to understand and clear in every step. For example,some part of the fluid mechanics, I think it's very difficult for me to understand in the past(in bachelor's degree) but when I study this book, it make me clear and easy. I think this book is suitable for the beginner than the others that I met before.

The writing was beautiful in an almost lyrical way, and the setting felt very realistic and vivid. The scope of the novel was large, but the gaps in time and perspective were handled well, and, overall, it didn't feel like the author had been off more than could be chewed. The characters were interesting as were the themes and the setting, but the plot might be a bit slow for some readers, though for me, that wasn't an issue. To be enjoyed for its language, characters, setting, and theme, but not so much for its plot.

Beautifully written, excellent story

Just an excellent book written by a brilliant storyteller. It's about parenthood, childhood and friendship. Marianne Fredriksson seemed to have a mystical side which she wove very delicately into this story through dreams and visions without overdoing it. Her characters feel real. She got the historical facts right too.

Review
I imagine pronouncing Nicholas Wong’s new book “cruh-VASS,” with the emphasis on the second syllable. That seems more poetic to me. However, Wong doesn’t really need my help; Crevasse is leaking poetry. An exploration of bodies, cities, and the rifts within them, Crevasse looks at the tiny cracks that break along the borders of public and private selves. Take a look at the opening lines of the opening poem, “Private Parts: Anti-Bodies,” and you’ll see what I mean (Dean Rader Kenyon Review)

After reading Crevasse, I reread my review of Wong's debut collection, Cities of Sameness. I wrote that his poems were like statues of Greek gods, sculpted without a spare ounce of fat, and I stand by this observation. Wong's works combine free verse with rigorously carved stanzas, often in couplets and triplets, meticulously versed. This, however, does not mean there has been no development in Wong's poetics. While Cities exhibited experimentation with poetic forms, Crevasse shows more preference for certain forms and motifs. There are three poems named "Private Parts," three named "Self-Portraits" and three structured as one-line stanzas, each starting with a Ginsbergian fixed base (such as "how" or "if"). Wong's diction is as precise as ever, although in Crevasse he often uses somewhat dated vocabulary to add layers of meanings to his language. Not only are the poems top-notch, but even the book's design is so impeccable - the cover, colour scheme, typeface and editing all seem right - that it is like holding a work of art, an elaborate manifestation of aesthetics. An intriguing collection, accessible and thought-provoking all at once.

It has been awhile since I have read a poetry collection, but reading Wong's Crevasse has reminded me how deep poetry can reach, wriggle, and slide into your subconscious, tripping fuses and setting off forgotten mines. Wong's poetry feels personal. There are stories hidden behind simple words, there are emotions hidden behind jargon, all stemming from the perspective of someone on the precipice, someone between worlds. The collection is beautifully arranged and demands to be read from cover to cover, but a few pieces that really stood out to me were: "If We Are a Metaphor of the Universe" ("If a fault can be undone like I am undone"), "Trio with Hsia Yu" (begins brilliantly with: "I entered the wrong room/and missed my reincarnation."), and "Aqua" (Loss now/a count noun,/concrete/like beans). An intriguing collection, accessible and thought-provoking all at once.

A very jagged read. It pushed and knocked me around a bit and I didn't always understand why. The poem "Neighbor" and "A Very Personal Reflection On My Lesson About Lord of the Flies" stood out to me. A fun and uncomfortable read for sure.

As a kind of novelistic correlative to human rights law, the Bildungsroman has thus been doing some of the sociocultural work of enforcement that the law cannot do for itself. This analysis of the cultural work of law and of the social work of literature challenges traditional Eurocentric histories of both international law and the dissemination of the novel. Taking his point of departure in Goethe's Wilhelm Meister, Slaughter focuses on recent postcolonial versions of the coming-of-age story to show how the promise of human rights becomes legible in narrative and how the novel and the law are complicit in contemporary projects of globalization: in colonialism, neoimperalism, humanitarianism, and the spread of multinational consumer capitalism.Slaughter raises important practical and ethical questions that we must confront in advocating for human rights and reading world literature-imperatives that, today more than ever, are intertwined.

If your budget only allows for one HTML5 and CSS3 book, this book is a terrific way to invest your money. I’ve reviewed HTML5 for Web Designers and Introducing HTML5 on this blog. I think this book is better than either of those books. That’s not saying the two books mentioned are not excellent books, because they are. I’ve read both of those books carefully and I still learned new and helpful things from HTML5 and CSS3. Plus, the VQS style is inherently easy to use with each topic detailed in small step-by-step bits. It’s so easy to find the one thing you need to know at any given moment with a VQS book.

Another advantage this book over the others I mentioned is that it can get a beginner going but it also offers a lot of good information for the experienced HTML and CSS wonk. If you’re teaching either of these topics, this book is classroom gold.

About the Author
Bruce Hyslop began developing for the Web in 1997 and focuses on interface technical architecture, development, usability, accessibility, and advocating best practices. He is the author of The HTML Pocket Guide (Peachpit Press, 2010), a thorough discussion and reference of all HTML elements (HTML5 and prior). Bruce also teaches a CSS course at UCLA Extension and occasionally speaks on matters regarding front-end development. Over the years, he has overseen front-end teams or been a developer for more than 150 projects, including those for ABC, BBC, Disney, Logitech, Microsoft, NBC Universal, Nokia, Target, Toyota, and Yahoo!, among others.

Bruce is an independent developer and consultant to agencies, start-ups, and others, previously having spent a decade in the digital agency world. Formerly, he was the senior director of the Interface Engineering Group (IEG) at Schematic, where he oversaw company-wide efforts to define and implement best practices regarding HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and accessibility wherever they may be applied: the browser, desktop, mobile devices, and emerging platforms.

Bruce was an early adopter of Web standards. At a previous agency in the early 2000s, he lead companies such as Baskin-Robbins and Pacific Gas & Electric into the fray of modern client-side practices while managing development between offices in Los Angeles, China, and New York.

Not the best book to learn bout HTML5

This is an OK book in general, the printing quality and design are nice, but the title is misleading. The title is riding this trendy HTML5 wave, but the main focus of this book is not HTML5/ CSS3. The book is about overall web design and basic HTML/CSS markup with HTML5/CSS3 coverage.

This "quick guide" is actually a heavy 550 page brick, which covers stuff not even related directly to HTML5, e.g. how to size images in Fireworks and Photoshop, how to do FTP file transfer with FileZilla program and how to "Secure a domain name and publish your site".

Also it contains a lot of trivial stuff such as creating a link to another web page, making text bold, starting a new paragraph with P tag, or creating external style sheets file. Old school HTML4 and CSS2 topics cover about half of this brick. Yet, authors were unable to find any space in this book for many new HTML5-specific topics such as most HTML5 APIs, which are parts of HTML5 specification, e.g. Canvas, Web Sockets, Microdata, Web Messaging, Web Workers, HTML5+RDFa, etc.

Also there is no coverage for the new HTML5 syntax rules, no HTML5/CSS3 browser compatibility info, and no list of new tags.

The book does include new HTML5 markup coverage but this is not enough to claim that HTML5 is the main focus and you will "Learn HTML5 the quick and easy way" (back cover). It seems that instead of re-writing this book from scratch, authors just merged the old CSS QuickStart Guide 5th edition with HTML QuickStart Guide 6th edition providing some facelift updates. The very old Windows XP screenshots look odd in this brand new 2012 "HTML5 book".

Semi-OK book for learning a little bit about HTML5 and CSS3

I've been working in web development (first as a hobby, then as part of my career) for the past 14 years. I purchased this book to add to my collection of books I turn to for reference. So, here are my thoughts:

OVERALL:
It's a decent book for learning a little bit about HTML5 and CSS3. I say decent meaning it's not great but it's not terrible. If you're absolutely brand new to web development, there's plenty enough in there to give you a "quickstart", but not near enough information for you to perfect the languages. However, if you're experienced in development, this book will practically bore you to tears with the absolute basics of HTML and CSS markup. By the time you actually get to HTML5 and CSS3, you realize there's not a whole lot of depth about either iteration of the language in there, and you're ready to take a nap!

WHAT THIS BOOK IS:
It's a learning manual. My understanding is that this series of books is used by some colleges and tech schools as course textbooks, and it shoes. There is a lot of markup (programming code) in the book, with screenshots showing what it looks like in the web browser. It doesn't go into a lot of detail about either HTML5 or CSS3 - it scratches the surface of both and leaves you wanting to learn more. One plus about the book is that it briefly covers development for mobile devices, though there are better books out there for that, such as HTML5 Mobile Websites: Turbocharging HTML5 with jQuery Mobile, Sencha Touch, and Other Frameworks. If you're new to web development and want to learn more, this is a good book for you.

WHAT THIS BOOK IS NOT:
It's not a reference manual. A reference manual would cover everything there is to know about HTML5 and CSS3. This book doesn't do that. To be honest, there are features of both that I was already using before reading this book, and those features aren't even mentioned in the book. It's not a book that someone with a decent amount of web development experience is going to find highly usable - most of what you already know is in the book, and not a whole lot of what you want to know is in the book.

UPDATE:

Going back through the book again, I've reconsidered my 3-star review. It's more like a 2 star. Honestly, it's nothing more than maybe an introduction to basic HTML and CSS with a little bit of HTML5 and CSS3, but definitely not a book that anyone with more than basic experience wants to consider. There are much better resources out there for both HTML5 and CSS3, and if you're just learning to code for the web, I'd be fearful that this book is going to "quickstart" you in the wrong direction. Visual Quickstart has had many good books - this is not one of them.

disappointing

I enjoyed the previous versions of this book by Elizabeth Castro and rated them with five stars. But this one does not meet the same standard. This volume is much more difficult to understand and does not flow from the essentials on to the more advanced stuff ina logical manner. It starts somewhere in the middle as if you already know the material. The appendices that I have heavily relied on in the past up to the sixth edition are missing in this version - bad mistake. Appendices are now available on the website but do not contain the required detail that was in the previous versions and should be in the printed book. Important new elements of HTML5 are missing such as , how can a book on HTML miss this very important element.

What happened? Did Bruce Hyslop take Castro's text and try to update it for HTML5? If so, he failed. Bring back Elizabeth! The publisher did not do well to allow such a downgrade in what was once a great book that I used to recommend to my students. No more.

Perhaps the publisher will update and fix this volume. I hope so.

About the Author

Angus Maddison is Emeritus Professor of Economic Sociology at the University of Groningen. Known for his pioneering work in the field of the quantification of economic growth in the global and historic perspective, Professor Maddison has enjoyed a varied career. He has held a number of positions at St. Andrews University, Johns Hopkins University, MacGill University, the OECD, and Harvard University. He has also acted as a policy advisor for a number of institutions and advised the governments of Ghana and Pakistan. Prof. Maddison was recently awarded the title of Commander in the Order of Orange-Nassau in the Netherlands.

Great statistics covering 2,000 years

The reason why you would buy this book is to get a collection of statistics going back 2,000 years in time. These data are not easy to create so the author has to be commended for providing a good synthesis of the data.

In addition to the data, the text contains a number of essays, which are kind of free-standing and not so coherent. So don't buy this book for a narrative of the world economy during the last 2,000 years. Buy the book for its statistics. If you don't need the statistics, don't buy the book.

Useful; 3.5 Stars

A useful set of essays from the distinguished economic historian Angus Maddison. The best parts of this book are the numerous data tables and charts examining various aspects of economic history. Included are essays on the demography and economy of the Roman empire, the revival of the Western European economy in the age of mercantile capitalism, the effects of expanding trade with Europe on Asia, Africa, and the Western Hemisphere, an assessment of the sources of the industrial revolution, an essay on pioneers in demography and accounting for national economic activity, and some projections for the future. Each essay, except the one on the early British pioneers of demography and national economic accounting, are essentially a concise text built around presentation of data on demography, economic activity, trade, etc. A great deal of this data is quite valuable. Estimates of population and trade in the Roman empire, the magnitude of the African slave trades across the Atlantic and to the Moslem world, the amount of silver transferred from Europe (originally from the Western Hemisphere), and many other important features of world economic history are included. These datasets are fascinating reading. The accompanying texts are a bit uneven. Generally, these are solid descriptions of major trends and facts but Maddison is not always a careful writer and some of his facts are wrong. The description of the Roman army, for example, is the army of the late Republic and early Principate, not the army of the later Roman Empire. Another example would be his underestimate of the number of deaths associated with the failure of the coup attempt in mid-1960s Indonesia. In some of his discussions of controversial issues, such as the origins of the industrial revolution, I'm not sure he is fair to some of the people he criticizes and he may exaggerate the differences between western Europe and China in some respects. His discussion of global warming is relatively superficial and he gives too much weight to skepticism about IPCC estimates of CO2 release and its probable effects. In fact, these estimates have been generally conservative underestimates. For a recent concise overview of this topic, see the recent article by James McCarthy in Science and for a good discussion of the economics, see the recent book by Nicholas Stern.

Excellent studies in economic history

This is a fascinating and brilliant collection of studies in economic history. In Part 1, he looks at various periods of history. Chapter 1 studies the Roman Empire, then the richest part of the world, and "peninsular Italy and its ruling oligarchy were the main gainers." Chapter 2 looks at the years 1500-1820, at Western Europe's unparalleled progress and the transformation of the Americas.

Chapter 3 examines the West's impact on Asia since 1500, particularly the effects that Portugal, the Netherlands and Britain had on China, India, Indonesia and Japan. Chapter 4 looks at the impact of Islam and Europe on Africa since 1 AD. He notes that North Africa was, from the 1st century until the Muslim conquest in the 7th century, a wealthy part of the Roman Empire.

In Part 2, Maddison looks at the advances in macro-measurement made by William Petty (1623-87), `one of the finest examples of the English Enlightenment', John Graunt (1620-74), the first demographer, and Gregory King (1648-1712) who produced estimates of the population of England and Wales, and of income and expenditure. Maddison shows how the evidence has refuted Kondratiev's notion of long waves and Malthus's dismal scaremongering.

In Part 3, Maddison critiques the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's `Special Report on Emissions Scenarios'. This assumes growth that in the OECD countries (the world's richest countries), income per head 1990 to 2100 would rise between from $19K to $109K, in the former socialist countries from $2.4K to $101K, in Asia from $536 to $72K, and in Africa from $1.6K to $61K. Thus the total GDP of Africa, Latin America and some Middle Eastern oil-producing countries would become far bigger than the OECD countries' total GDP. Maddison comments mildly that this "seems implausible and differs sharply from historical experience."

Yet, as he points out, "This assumption is a major driving force in projected energy use and carbon emissions." On this basis, the IPCC forecast a temperature rise of between 0.5 to 1.30C by 2030. He judges, "In view of my scepticism about the higher IPCC projections of GDP, energy consumption and emissions, the lower end of their temperature projections seems the more plausible."

He also observes that the earth's temperature fell between 1945 and 1976, when we had record GDP growth of more than 4% a year. As he notes, "It is odd that the cooling happened when the pace of world economic growth was a good deal faster than in 1910-45 and 1976-2000."

About the Author
John Fulford’s first experience as a teacher was in a lonely, one-room school in northern Canada. During his subsequent forty years of teaching he taught every grade from kindergarten to college prep. as well as adult education. He has also taught overseas. Born in Spain of British parents, Fulford was educated in England before emigrating to Canada, where he earned his B. Ed. at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. After moving to California, he earned his M.A. at California State University in Long Beach.

The most comprehensive book on English spelling rules

I buy books on Amazon all the time, but this is the second time I have ever rated a book on Amazon and it is because I want people to know that this humble-looking book is an excellent book on English spelling rules. This is a very good book that gives a comprehensive list and explanations of the rules governing English spelling. It is fun to read and easy to use. There is an excellent chapter on the history of English spelling rules that I enjoyed so much. Thank you, Mr. Fulford.

SUPERB!!!!

This is the best, most comprehensive manual that I have ever read. It is clear and concise. I only lament that I had not had it in my first year of teaching. It is useful for every age level. I intend to use it with my fourth grade bilingual students this school year. Reading is writing, and writing is reading. This manual will help me to guide my students to be better spellers, hence better readers. I first purchased the kindle version, and when I discovered how fantastic it is, I purchased a hard copy in the event that if something were ever to happen to my kindle and I could not access it, I would have the manual in print. This is a book that I hope will not ever go out of print. Purchase this book if you are a student, a teacher, an adult, a second language learner, or just someone who is curious about the English Spelling Rules. I cringe every time I hear someone say that English is just a complicated language and one must simply memorize everything. That is not true. I actually have heard teachers of English say this...no wonder our American students cannot spell and continue to widen the achievement gap! This book is great!

If anyone writes, this is a must. A great little book to use as reference and to learn more about spelling rules. I do a lot of writing and this book is at my side.

Kindle Version does not include the videos from the CD?!

Really frustrated because even though the cover says that there would be a CD included, there is no where to watch the videos if you got the kindle version. Maybe I'm wrong and if so someone help me please but I'm very mad right now because I'm unable to do homework without the videos.

Poorly Made e-book for kindle

I found out I had the incorrect book and returned it to amazon but when i was using it , the formatting and everything was haphazard for the kindle version YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

*EDIT:

I would really like to stress that for 84$ this is slightly egregious how much this book is messed up, it shouldnt be on the market let alone for that price with all the glaring issues in this edition.

I purchased the physical textbook, while bulky, it has everything in working order and I have no other opinion on the actual course material seeing how Im taking a course which is for general education requirements (which uses this book)
