I've read a borrowed copy of this; seeing that Amazon had it, I bought my own copy - I could see that digesting this material is going to take a while. The text is all here, unabridged. The image quality of the illustrations leaves a lot to be desired with this edition, however. It looks like a second-generation xerox in spots. If this is a problem, do yourself a favor and look for the 1980's hardcover reprint. The images are much better in that one. That said, the substance of this book is thoroughly recommended for the serious student of electrical engineering as well as fans of Tesla. Since this text was written in the late 1800s, and is reprinted here without alteration, the language can sometimes have the density of Shakespeare (without the poetry). Much of the phraseology has passed out of use in the last hundred years. This material is written for the intelligencia of Tesla's era, and not "dumbed down" for this age as many other books are. This is an advantage for someone who wants an authoratative viewpoint on this subject (who more authoratative than Tesla!), but poisonous to the casual reader. Many of the inventions discussed in this book are now commonplace (for instance - the AC induction motor, fully described here, is in use everywhere). Nikola's own depth of understanding of the principles involved make this a thoroughly intense experience for those who are ready for it. Readers who can understand this material are going to experience the devine "Ah-ha" on a regular basis throughout this book. Others will be put to sleep. When I was young I planned to write something along the lines of "an evaluation of Tesla's scientific contributions." Three things stopped me: 1) procrastination, 2) laziness, and 3) the impression that everyone who writes about Tesla will have a "kook" label stick to them for the rest of their lives. Why this is so is interesting, but first about the book. This is a reprint of one published a little more than a hundred years ago, and is most definitely not a "kook book." The author, Mr. Martin, writes a very good description of the nature and significance of Tesla's work up to about 1895. The second part of the book consists of reprints of lectures delivered by Tesla, apparently written by the great man himself. The book contains many good diagrams and illustrations. Both parts have the expected "old-fashioned" feel, but the book gives us a chance to compare Tesla's writing style with that of a contemporary. My own impression is that Tesla's writing style is fairly good as well as interesting, though perhaps even more florid than customary during that age. The book is rather long, and I would venture only two types are likely to read it in entirety: 1) historians of science, and 2) the Tesla sycophants. When the book was originally published Tesla was at the height of his powers. About that time his assertions started to become more and more grandiose, if not fantastic. Following the debacle of his "world wireless power transmission" scheme (just prior to WWI), his reputation suffered. Although he lived until 1941, in later life he tended to be increasingly seen as an eccentric loner and kook. He died in loneliness and poverty. OK, so why does a "kook" label tend stick to anyone who has more than passing interest in Tesla? The first reason is, of course, the fantastic and eccentric claims Tesla made late in life. But by itself this is not enough - after all, even the great Newton dabbled in alchemy and the Book of Revelations late in life. About the Author
Nikola Tesla was born in Croatia in 1856. He emigrated to the United States in 1884 and worked for a short time for Thomas Edison. A pioneer in the field of high-tension electricity, Tesla made many discoveries and inventions of lasting value to the development of radio transmission and electricity, one of the most famous of which was the power system at Niagara Falls. He died in 1943.

Record of a pioneering work

A volume that records the early pioneering work of an electrical genius and inventor, in the same platform of Thomas Edison and Charles Steinmetz, Guglielmo Marconi and George Westinghouse, though never as well known. It shows in great detail not only the works of Tesla's experiments, but will give the reader a glimpse of the amazing range of his thinking. From alternating curent generators to Unipolar generators (generators being just one field of study) to theories and applications of polyphase currents and motors to high frequency and high potential currents, this gives the reader some basic understanding of his pioneering work.
This is not about his life and times, and how this genius could understand the mysteries of electromagnestism but could not help himself when it comes to battling corporations represented by lawyers of JP Morgan. It may seem outdated, since the work was published in the 1890s. But nowhere can you find a book that will explain more about the foundations of his technical and scientific work.

This is the real thing

This book is the compilation of Lectures given by Tesla in the late 1880's where he explains basically everything he has done so far, including real practical advice on how to build motors, coils, etc. Get it and ask yourself howcome he is rarely mentioned in today's textbooks.

This is a very detailed technical writing of Tesla's major inventions, and it was published in 1894 by Electrical Engineer Magazine. If you want to really dig into the essence of Tesla's inventions this is an good source. So is "The Complete Patents of Nikola Tesla" ISBN 1-56619-266-8 published 1994. The number of contributions he made to technology is incredible! This man was truly amazing and probably the greatest genius of all time. It's too bad he was such an eccentric and failed to share more of his work with his peers. Had this happened our world would probably be far more advanced technologically. But the works he did share drastically changed the world for the better. He is finally beginning to get the credit he is due. If he could have appropriately financed his endeavors, there is no telling what might have transpired.

I would give this book 1,000 stars if Amazon allowed it

I am not an easy Amazon grader, but given the option, I would give this 1,000 stars. What an incredible book.

My dad was an avid griller. My parents lived 20 minutes away and we would go over for dinner often. Everything he cooked was delicious - roasts, pork chops, ribs, whatever. I LOVED going there to eat. I don't know if I always assumed that he would be there, but I was too stupid to ask him how he did it. I just took it for granted. Well, 2 1/2 years ago he died unexpectedly. He and my mom were on a cruise, he got a gum infection, and was dead within 24 hours. My mom died of cancer 18 months later and whatever they knew, went with them to their graves. If I could do it all over again, I would spend hours with him and soak up all he knew about grilling, but I missed that opportunity.

Enter How to Grill. This book walks you through picture-by-picture what to do. There are no assumptions and no ambiguities, this really is a great book for people who have never done it before. Today I cooked spareribs and this may be one of the top ten meals I have ever eaten. I used his recipe for the rub and for the BBQ sauce and wow! They were positively amazing. This may sound silly, but when I grill, I feel closer to him, as this was something he absolutely loved to do.

While I think it would have been fun learning how to grill from my dad, I feel so thankful for this book. This is brilliantly written and will get anyone to a good comfort level. I find that many beginner books (whatever the topic) often try to cover too much, sacrificing basic information. This book is all you need to start grilling.

Nine months after my dad died, our adopted son was born. I have so many hopes and dreams for him and our life together. He is 22 months old now and I dream of the day I can teach him how to throw a baseball, how to camp, and how to grill. This book has given me a chance to learn something I should have learned years ago.

Thank you Steven Raichlen -- this really is much more than just a book to me.

This book turned my husband into a grillmaster

My husband can't cook. He hates cooking. I love to cook. I love to grill. I kept telling my husband that if he could learn to grill, he'd be a really cool dude. Plus, while he was babysitting the Weber (or gas grill), I could spend more time in the kitchen preparing the side dishes and dessert. This book has terrific step-by-step photos. My husband began to grill with confident, as he would read how to set up the Weber. Lo and behold, he is quite the Weber grill master and I am so impressed! I highly recommend this book to be the Grilling Bible for beginner grillers-- or even advance grillers. One of the best books around.

Excellent learning resource for nearly anyone, and great recipies too.

I just received my second copy of this book, this time as a hard cover because I used the paperback copy so much it is falling apart. I have bought this book as gifts for several friends and and family, and have shown it to co-workers who also purchased the book. It is a great resource for nearly anyone, and especially a great starting point for those new to grilling.

Several years ago I bought this book after more than two decades of using grills and I was shocked at how much technique I did not know as a casual griller. This book includes plenty of pictures that tremendously aid in the understanding of the relatively simple and very straight-forward grilling techniques which are explained very clearly by the author. Along with the descriptions are some interesting and brief background stories that makes the reading even more enjoyable. 'How to Grill' also covers true barbecuing, and explains the differences between grilling and barbecuing. This book covers the 'basics' with enhanced recipes such as hamburgers, hot dogs, potatoes and corn-on-the-cob, but also shows how to grill some more unusual and perhaps unexpected foods including many kinds of vegetables, and fruits. Included are some unexpected recipes such as grilled pizza and turkey pastrami and even tofu. Adding to the usefulness of the book the included recipes are delicious and unique, and yet simple enough to make almost anytime using ingredients that are typically not hard to find. Techniques explained also include how to properly set-up and use grills (gas, charcoal, and smokers of nearly all kinds) and even how to clean them when you are done.

'How to Grill' is a useful book to have for nearly anyone's collection, and is an ideal first grilling book for a novice to begin working towards being a true grill master. This book is Ideal as a gift, too; it is received very well.

For Victorian era writers only

The title should have been "A Writer's Guide to Everyday Life in Victorian England". While there is a wealth of information on Victorian era customs and daily life, there is very little on the Regency period. Even when the book makes general statements these statements are often applicable only to the Victorian era. As a Regency writer myself, I would caution other writers not to rely on this book for Regency period information.
There were great differences between the Regency and Victorian eras, obvious differences such as changes in fashion, or the rapid industrializiation, and more subtle differences such as transformations in public and private behavior.
Recommended for Victorian authors, but for Regency authors you would be better served to seek out a copy of "The Regency Companion" by Laudermilk & Hamlin.

A very uneven book

This book could be very useful, but often more as a guide to other sources, rather than as a authority in its own right. The appendices, listing numerous references sources as well as a very useful list of relevant museums should be valuable to anyone starting out to do research. Particularly relevant sources are also collected at the end each chapter.

If this is intended to be a reference source for writers, then they need detailed information laid out in an efficient format. Hughes does this sometimes, and other times seems to wander off into writing an anecdotal social history. I wonder whether it was a good idea to pack 90 years that saw enormous social changes into one book. I think that Hughes has often wasted space including extensive quotes that would have been better paraphrased and condensed, as well as including information of marginal use, such as numerous recipes and a list of the number of servants advertising for jobs in the Times on January 10, 1870.

One might also wonder why 1801-1810 is not covered, especially since there is a writer's guide covering the 18th century. The period isn't completely ignored, but it must be frustrating for anyone wanting information about the turn of the 18th-19th century. Granted, the Regency, strictly speaking, was 1811-1820, but that wasn't the start of the Victorian era either. Many people consider the Regency period to go back to 1800 or even 1780.

The chapters themselves are uneven in quality. The first section, on lighting, is precisely the sort of thing a writer would need: the different types of lighting are carefully described in detail with dates given so that the reader knows precisely what was in use when. Rather than simply saying that gaslights began to be installed in London in 1807, Hughes carefully explains that only certain small areas were lit at first. There are also very useful lists like the terminuses for the stage coaches, papers in circulation, naval insignia, prohibitions to marriage, etc.

On the other hand, Hughes tells us that flush toilets were invented by 1777 and then leaps to the 1860s to talk about Victorian bathrooms. What about the near century in between? Were people installing flush toilets, or were they simply experimental? On a number of occasions, Hughes throws in an interesting quote on some subject, such as the excerpts from The Habits of Good Society, published in 1864 without any indication of whether the information is valid for the entire era or only for the immediate period.

In the chapter on clothing, Hughes wisely tells us that she is not going to attempt to give a history of fashion in one chapter and provides an extensive bibliography. She then takes up the chapter with long quotes from various sources, but this hit or miss information isn't very helpful, and could have been summarized in a few sentences. I think that Hughes would have done better to warn the reader about tricky subjects that may not be covered in a basic history of fashion and need to be researched. Court dress, for example, was codifed, and a writer should not necessarily send a character to court in a fashionable outfit, however fine. I'm not an expert, but I believe that the rules for court dress also changed during this period: an author would need to look this up so that the outfits are appropriate to the specific time. I believe that this is also the period when the special-purpose wedding dress came into fashion. Early in the century, brides were married in their best day dress, cut according to ordinary fashion, not a special design. If she could afford a trousseau, it might be new for the wedding, but it would not be any special color. Veils and the one-use fantasy dress came later.

Hughes does give us some information relating specifically to the middle class and the poor, which is good, but she often describes customs, particularly mourning customs, which can only have applied to the wealthiest, without much indication of the shift in customs as one moves down the social scale. She does include a useful list of mourning fabrics, though oddly enough, it does not include paramatta, which is mentioned several times in the text.

I'd love to see a second, greatly revised edition. Meanwhile, I think that writers interested in the Regency Era would be better served by Malcolm Day's Voices from the World of Jane Austen, Jennifer Kloester's Georgette Heyer's Regency World, and Sharon H. Laudermilk's & Teresa Hamlin's The Regency Companion (Garland Reference Library of the Humanities, Vol. 841).

Good but mostly sporadic

It is impossible to sum up social life and culture for the 19th century, and authors simply should not try. Hughes' book is a good example. It certainly has many pieces of useful information for both writers and scholars--I never knew that the Adelphi Theater was only open from October to April, for example--and Hughes' tracing of certain topics such as indoor lighting or the railways are concise and intriguing.
Unfortunately, she doesn't explain her terms nearly enough, and the quotations from contemp- orary sources seem overused--as though all of those period recipes were simply padding out space. There's an entire paragraph devoted to the etiquette of "cutting" which is completely incomprehensible if you are not first aware of the actual meaning of social cuts. Also, Hughes does not really work within context well; she doesn't seem to understand that etiquette books were not so much used by those in the upper circles, but by those aspiring to move upwards, or that the very reason for a plethora of etiquette books implies that they are needed--in other words, people are *not* following proper etiquette in their daily lives.
The writer of Victorian-based historical novels would do well to have this book on her reference shelf, but the casual reader will do better to read Sally Mitchell's Daily Life in Victorian England. This book would have been much more useful if it had narrowed its topic and explored them in greater depth.
