About the Author

James M. Henslin, who was born in Minnesota, graduated from high school and junior college in California and from college in Indiana. Awarded scholarships, he earned his Master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After this, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, and spent a year studying how people adjust to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology are the sociology of everyday life, deviance, and international relations. Among his numerous books is Down-to-Earth Sociology : Introductory Readings (Free Press), now in its twelfth edition. This book of readings reflects some of these sociological interests. He has also published widely in sociology journals, including Social Problems and American Journal of Sociology,

While a graduate student, Jim Henslin taught at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. After completing his doctorate, he joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology. He says, “I’ve always found the introductory course enjoyable to teach. I love to see students’ faces light up when they first glimpse the sociological perspective and begin to see how society has become an essential part of how they view the world.”

Henslin enjoys reading and fishing. His two favorite activities are writing and traveling. He especially enjoys visiting and living in other cultures, for this brings him face to face with behaviors and ways of thinking that he cannot take for granted, experiences that “make sociological principles come alive.”

If you use this book to teach intro soc, be aware of an error in it

This review is written for other instructors considering or using this textbook to teach introductory sociology. It's not a general review of the book from a student perspective.

Henslin writes various sizes of the down-to-earth textbooks, small (core concepts), medium (essentials), and large (the main textbook, this one). All of them feature Henslin's real-life approach and emphasize common sense vs. social knowledge based on facts and on use of sociological concepts. But it is sloppily edited. In every edition of these books that I have seen, including the new 10th edition, and in each size (s, m, l), an important error is repeated in the gender chapter: the claim that most victims of homicide are female. The error is in the chapter text, the chapter-end summary, and the test bank (watch out for that question). It matters because a) I'm trying to teach students that facts are more reliable than guesses, stereotypes, and media-based perceptions, b) the particular error reflects the slant of the gender chapter, which is women-as-victims-of-men, when the truth is more complex (women are also victimized by women in many ways, in many countries; and men are most often the targets of violence by men), and c) if students are paying this much for a book, the basic facts should be right.

I've communicated this error repeatedly over the past year to my rep, who is unwilling or unable to pass it on to the publisher. I tried to find a way to contact the publisher via the website and gave up. I don't want to knock the book as a whole--it has many good features--but I won't use it again until this is fixed. There are too many similar alternatives, and I can always discuss some of Henslin's common sense vs. reality points in class without using it as a required text. I like the TestGen system, and the testbank for this book is good with the exception of the question I've pointed out here. (On the other hand, there may be other factual errors in the book that I haven't noticed.)

As an instructor, I've found that the password-protected study site is a disadvantage of this book and publisher. The study site is high quality and is great if the student buys the book with the password card still attached. But students who buy it used without the card get upset when they can't access the site and blame me for the problem. Open-access study sites are the way to go, publishers! This is one of those textbooks in which continual new editions are not really needed but get published anyway because of the changing structure of the textbook market. That practice is so common that although it creates incredible book costs for students, there are few ways to get around it.

GREAT for College Students

I needed this book for a sociology course and I think it is fantastic! The author has done an amazing job to help readers easily relate to the subject and keep it interesting by describing his own experiences & other people's experiences around the world. The definitions are even in boldface & described on the page so that you don't have to keep flipping back to the glossary. The book is informative, yet delightful as the author shows you how to use your sociological imagination & how to open your mind. I'd recommend this book to any person interested in sociology because of how clear & enjoyable it is to read. I've never had so much fun reading a textbook!

Almost the Exact Same As 3rd Edition

It is an interesting textbook; easily readable and understandable.
Instead of paying $86 for the third edition I risked getting this, 2nd edition and it turns out
they are both almost absolutely the same.
The 3rd addition comes with a CD and you get access to a supplmental website - but if you do your reading you can get by without the supplemental material just fine.
If you are a decent student, I recommend getting the 2nd edition (today available used on amazon for 78 cents).
If you go to class, read the book and fufill any writing assignments then you can do just fine with the 2nd edition.

The regents exams are getting easier and easier, so this book is good but pretty useless. But you can't blame them and they did a good job. The vocab section is more than you need on the exam, but it is helpful for the next level course in Spanish, so its not useless. Don't buy the old exams- they are harder and unrealistic to the new ones. They did a good job but you don't need the book unless you teach yourself Spanish

The debate has been so acrimonious at times that in 2000, Sikh leader Joginder Singh Vedanti issued a directive that Sikh scholars not comment on the Dasam Granth publicly at all pending a committee inquiry into the matter. Debating the Dasam Granth is the first English language, book-length critical study of this controversial Sikh text in many years. Based on research on the original text in the Brajbhasha and Punjabi languages, a critical reading of the secondary literature in Punjabi, Hindi, and English, and interviews with scholars and Sikh leaders in India, it offers a thorough introduction to the Dasam Granth, its history, debates about its authenticity, and an in-depth analysis of its most important compositions.

However, where the design requirements are code specific, this book refers to the provisions of Eurocode 2: Design of Concrete Structures and, where possible, the notation is the same as in Eurocode 2. A parallel volume is written to the Australian Standard for Concrete Structures AS3600-2009.

The text runs from an introduction to the fundamentals to in-depth treatments of more advanced topics in modern prestressed concrete structures. It suits senior undergraduate and graduate students and also practising engineers who want comprehensive introduction to the design of prestressed concrete structures. It retains the clear and concise explanations and the easy-to-read style of the first edition, but the content has been extensively re-organised and considerably expanded and updated. New chapters cover design procedures, actions and loads; prestressing systems and construction requirements; connections and detailing; and design concepts for prestressed concrete bridges. All the authors have been researching and teaching the behaviour and design of prestressed concrete structures for over thirty-five years and the proposed new edition of the book reflects this wealth of experience. The work has also gained much from Professor Gilbert active and long-time involvement in the development of standards for concrete buildings and concrete bridges.
