Philip Davies has written five books and many articles on the Dead Sea Scrolls, as well as other books on biblical history. George J. Brooke is Rylands Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis at the University of Manchester and co-founder of the journal Dead Sea Discoveries. Phillip R. Callaway has written widely on the Dead Sea Scrolls, including the book The History of the Qumran Community: An Investigation.

The Dead Sea Scrolls - Where to Start

Where does one start the study of the Dead Sea Scrolls? One would do well to start with copies of the texts. The biblical texts may be found in _The Dead Sea Scrolls Bible_ translated by Martin Abegg et al. The non-biblical texts which includes the sectarian texts, may be found in _The Dead Sea Scrolls_ translated by Michael Wise et al. (Incidentally there are no unpublished texts of any significance. These two volumes cover the field.)
Then one needs a book which explains where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found such as Jodi Magness' _The Archaeology of Qumran and the Dead Sea Scolls_. But as the starting point one needs _The Complete World of the Dead Sea Scrolls_.
Philip Davies, George Brooke, and Phillip Callaway have written a "complete" introduction to the Dead Sea Scrolls. The first section of the book discusses the discovery of the scrolls, their editing, and their publication. The second section discusses the history of the time of the scrolls, including the sects of that time.
Perhaps the third section should have been divided into two. The third section begins with chapters on how to make a scroll, script styles, Carbon-14 dating of the scrolls, and how to reconstruct a scroll from fragments. (If one has never read of the techniques for scroll reconstruction, this chapter is a must.)
Next comes the bulk of the book. The most significant scrolls from each cave are discussed. Cave 1 had a number of the sectarian scrolls. Cave 4 had the largest number of scrolls. The scrolls from Caves 5 to 10 receive only two pages of attention despite the sensationalism surrounding the Greek scrolls found in Cave 7 (and see also page 190).
The fourth section of the book discusses the settlement of Qumran. (One should be sure to refer to Magness' _Archaeology_.) The fifth section discusses the meaning of the Dead Sea Scrolls. I will leave these for the consideration of the reader.
Included in _Complete World_ are a list of the contents of Discoveries in the Judean Desert, a chart of paleographic Hebrew, a list of the scrolls by cave, etc. _Complete World_ is a feast of reading with the scrumptious photographs of a coffee table book. This book deserves more than a five star rating.

The Dead Sea Scrolls in context

Like most Thames & Hudson productions, this book is a very beautiful text. Printed in vibrant, full-colour process, every page has graphics, pictures, colours, maps, or some other piece of visual interest. When dealing with a subject like the Dead Sea Scrolls, the material for visual presentation is grand, as are the settings in which many of the scrolls have been found.

After a brief introduction and chronology, the book is divided into five primary sections. The first section explores the early discoveries of the Dead Sea Scrolls, including the famous Damascus document, a 'Dead Sea Scroll' actually not from the Dead Sea area - 50 years prior to the 1947/48 discoveries, Solomon Schechter of Cambridge University discovered manuscripts in a Cairo genizah, and after the discovery of the DSS, the particular 'Damascus document' was recognised as being related to the DSS texts. This section also looks at the editorial process and the personalities first involved in reconstruction and editing of the texts. This involves the many controversies (such as the charges of cover-ups of damaging material, intentional delays, and simply old fashioned academic rivalries) as well as controversial personalities (Allegro, for example, wrote extensively apart from his DSS assignments calling into question the origins of Christianity).

The second section looks at the world of the DSS. This sets the historical context of Judea/Palestine in the centuries before and during Roman domination and occupation. From the Babylonian exile to the revolts against Rome and the formation of Rabbinic Judaism, the culture of the communities is important for understanding the context in which the biblical and extra-biblical texts of the DSS were written.

The longest section of the book is the third section, looking specifically at the scrolls themselves. The authors take a cave-by-cave approach, showing the discoveries of each cave from Cave 1 to Cave 4 in great detail (these were the earliest and largest discoveries), Cave 5 to 10 as a set piece, and Cave 11 which includes the famous Temple Scroll and an important Psalm Scroll. One of the issues the authors highlight is the difficulty in using the term 'biblical' with regard to the scrolls - the canon of the Bible was not set until well after the scroll writing/copying period, and despite the fact that every book of the Hebrew Bible is represented among the scrolls save Esther, 'it seems that other texts were regarded as having equal status.' Some appear in the official Apocrypha of Christian Bibles, and others were unknown until the discovery of the scrolls.

The fourth section looks specifically at the ruins at Qumran, the archaeological digs and discoveries as well as the competing interpretations placed on the ruins and artifacts. Qumran has been envisioned as a monastery, a military outpost, a Herodian villa, and a proto-city. Whether or not the scrolls have any real connection to Qumran is also a debated topic, although most scholars currently think there is a connection.

The final section looks at the meaning of the scrolls as a set piece. What are the implications for Judaism? What does the scroll material reveal about early Christianity? 'The Dead Sea Scrolls have revolutionised our perception of Early Judaism,' the authors write. They are a unique witness to their time, offering contemporary, first-hand evidence of the sectarian issues of the day. With regard to early Christianity, the scrolls predate the origins of the early Christian writings, but they were by most accounts still being written, and then hidden, during the time of the Apostles. Scholars continue to speculate about the Essene connections with John the Baptist and Jesus (although the New Testament never mentions this sect, and yet does mention Pharisees and Sadduccees). There are important parallels, but neither the early Christian movement nor the Dead Sea Scroll community were unique in their messianic expectation.

This is a book about the scrolls. It discusses the context, the framework, the history and the discovery in good form. It is a good introductory text to what the scrolls are, and includes brief synopses of the contents of the scrolls. This is not a collection of the scrolls with translations; while it has pictures from all of the sets of scrolls, it is not a comprehensive compendium of photographic plates of all of the scrolls and scroll fragments. There are other (much more expensive) collections with these. This is a good book for use with study groups, classes, and for the general reader who wants an overview of the scrolls, their history, their basic contents, and the surrounding issues and controversies. The text was well written by Philip Davies, George Brooke, and Phillip Callaway, noted scholars in the field .

A Wide-Ranging Introduction to the Scrolls

The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls by Bedouin at Khirbet Qumran in 1947 was one of the greatest archaeological finds in recorded history. Produced from circa 200 B.C. to circa 100 A.D., the Scrolls are a wealth of knowledge from the ancient Middle East during Biblical times. The convoluted story of their collection, translation and publication has taken over fifty years and filled dozens of volumes. To a noephyte student of the Scrolls this collection of literature can seem overwhelming. Many different threads of research weave the tapestry of the Scrolls' history, and adding to the confusion are the many publications which are filled with ill-advised conjecture, conspiracy theories, misguided research and the like. _The Complete World of the Dead Sea Scrolls_ provides a starting point, a lens through which to view and organize this body of research material.
Phillip R. Davies, George J. Brooke and Phillip R. Callaway, three of the most respected scholars involved in the research and publication the famous Dead Sea Scrolls, have combined their expertise to create the most complete introduction to the Scrolls imaginable. Here "complete" does not mean that the authors have included the entire body of knowledge available regarding the Scrolls, but refers to the fact that they have introduced the reader to every facet of the story of the Scrolls' discovery, research and history. _The Complete World of the Dead Sea Scrolls_ is an overview which introduces the reader to the many avenues of research regarding the Scrolls and provides an extensive "Further Reading" list to allow the reader to increase their knowledge in the areas of greatest interest to them, whether it be translation, archaeology, historical context, the meaning of the Scrolls to studies of Judaism and Christianity, etc.
With over 200 illustrations, numerous side bars, factfiles, timelines, etc., this book is a beautifully presented treatment of the Scrolls, and a must read for anyone interested in studying them. Organization is very much like that of a text book, breaking the subject matter into various sections rather than chapters, and reminds me of the various series that Time-Life used to publish. This is appropriate, since _The Complete World_ is a series which includes such titles as _The Complete Pyramids_, _The Complete Temples of Ancient Egypt_, _The Complete World of Tutankhamun_ and _The Complete World of the Valley of the Kings_.

She walked the hexagonal steps of the Giant's caueway, gazed at the serenity of the Seine river, and marveled at the singing gondoliers of Venice. Lisa'a love of literature immersed her in centuries of traditional tales from each land, revealing a wealth of courtship and romance lore. L'amour, toujour - the French know romance!

The French have always been known for being true romantics. Lisa's book on French romance and weddings gives those of us who weren't born there the chance to revel in the history, culture and traditions of that culture. It comes complete with ideas for proposals, engagements, and weddings, as well as recipes to bring the glory of France to your table.

From the history of famous French lovers, through courting and dating traditions, reading the book is like steeping yourself in the fragrance of the lavender hillsides of Provence, the taste of champagne, and the passion induced by a close embrace and the whisper of "l'amour".

I've only been to Paris once, with an old friend. As we were strolling through the Montmartre area, an artist approached us and asked if he could sketch a portrait of my friend's petite soeur (little sister). It took a moment to realize he meant me. Nowhere but Paris could I be half so lovely as he drew me, half so beautiful and carefree, half so open to new possibilities. This book is a recipe for romance. Read it an enjoy.

About the Author
JEFF STONE lives in the Midwest with his wife, their two children, and a python named Yokwan (Cantonese for "Jade Bangle"). Mr. Stone holds a black belt in Shaolin-Do kung fu. He had the honor of traveling to China with the Shaolin-Do grand master and test for his black belt at Shaolin Temple. Like the Five Ancestors, Mr. Stone was adopted as an infant. He began searching for his birth parents when he was 18 and found them 15 years later.

Exciting

This book lived up to my expectations of Jeff Stone's writing for excitement, anticipation, mystery, clever twists and just pure enjoyment to read. I loved the Five Ancestors' series and hoped Mr. Stone would keep the series developing. I'd grown to really love the characters and didn't want the story to end. New book, Phoenix, is a contemporary story with historical ties. I think Mr. Stone was able to develop a character in Phoenix, who lived up to the intrigue of the past Ancestor characters. I hope these more contemporary stories will keep true to some link with the ancient Ancestors' stories. I can't wait for the next book to come out! Keep our Ancestors alive, please, Mr. Stone!

This is a very good book. The problem is that the field is changing so rapidly it is difficult to keep up with the implementation of PPACA and its implications. The book does a great job of communicating some important basic and advanced topics. I have read about 6 chapters as the required text for the GBA designation. So far I enjoy it...

It may be long and difficult reading but it is thorough and has all the info you need for CEBS. Can NOT be used without the learning guide to study for GBA 1-3 (the exam is not chronological by chapter). Thankful for online version on my tablet as a train commuter who can't (won't?) lug around a 20 pound book.

Constructively Provocative

Paul Jones, organist and Music Director at Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia is, by all accounts, a very talented individual. He was privileged to serve alongside James Boice (who once said "Paul is everything I ever prayed for in a music director") and now works closely with Philip Ryken in serving one of America's foremost Presbyterian churches. Singing and Making Music, subtitled "Issues in Church Music Today" is Jones' attempt to distill and share some of his years of accumulated wisdom and knowledge.

Singing and Making Music is not a traditional book, emphasizing an argument that moves logically from introduction to conclusion, but is a collection of essays dealing with the common theme of worshipping God through music. To some extent this leaves the book feeling a little bit disjointed and without a consistent flow. At the same time, this format allows the author to cover a wide range of topics without having to bridge one to another. I feel that this is a suitable format for such a book book. Jones covers a great deal of ground through the book's thirty-three chapters which are grouped under four headings: Corporate Worship, Hymnody and Psalmody, Issues and Composers and Composition. While any Christian could benefit from reading this book, the target audience is clearly intended to be other music directors or worship leaders. With my limited knowledge of musical theory, I was occasionally unable to follow or understand the author's arguments. This was particularly true of the chapters which discussed topics which are far more theoretical than practical to me, such as "The Anatomy of a Hymn Tune," a chapter in which we read the following: "Such intervallic relationships between voices other than the melodic one (i.e., the altor, tenor, and bass) have to do with harmonic choices. The harmony throughout the hymn tune is functional, yet colorful, with numerous intentional dissonances." For all I know, he may have just insulted my country or provided a recipe for chocolate brownies (though I suspect not).

Thankfully, the majority of the book is perfectly accessible to a person like myself who loves music, but knows very little about it. Jones is always gracious but always biblical when dealing with some of the more contentious issues facing churches struggling with the subjects of worship and music. He argues that Christians ought to avoid the world's musical trends and to develop music that is distinct. The book's main points can be summarized under the three following headings. First, worship practices must be measured by the Word of God. "Scriptural principles should inform all our thinking, traditions, and practices in worship." Second, we need to comprehend the pastoral nature of music ministry. "Music is not in competition with pastoral work. It is pastoral work in the sense that it can provide many of the same kinds of spiritual care and leadership that pastoral ministry provides." Third, we should ensure that budgets and practices are informed by these truths. "Music in worship cannot be truly conformed to biblical standards and examples of excellence unless it is actively supported by the church leadership in word and deed and is adequately funded." You can see a logical progression from theory to practice. A church should move from asking "Why do we do what we do in the way that we do it? How should we be doing it according to Scripture? What will it take to make it so?"

While Jones serves in a large church and surely enjoys a large budget, he is sensitive to those who serve in smaller churches and may have only a limited number of resources, both financial and human, to dedicate to music. He provides suggestions on the first instruments a church should purchase and the type of music director a church should eventually seek. He suggests when a church should seek to hire a music director and what type of responsibilities he should enjoy. There is even a chapter providing instruction on purchasing an organ.

Always practical and biblical, Singing and Making Music was an enjoyable read and one that is suitable for both the laity and those in leadership. Ligon Duncan, in his endorsement for this book, described it with the phrase "constructively provocative." I believe that is an apt description. This book is deeply biblical, uplifting and constructively provocative. It is well worth reading.

A book that made me shout "Amen!"

As an organist who grew up musically on the street corner with no formal training, I found myself shouting "Amen!" at various points throughout the book. It also caused me to seriously reconsider whether my motives for playing organ are in line with scripture, or to get the people in the congregation to shout "Amen!" when I am done.

A definitive line is drawn in Mr. Jones' book between trained musicians (whom I think the author meant trained with a lot of study and degrees, but hopefully includes "naturals" like me with no initials after his name) versus the engineer who claims he isn't all that musical but loves strumming guitar chords along with his five buddies who also love strumming guitar and together form the basis for a lot of the worship bands in churches today. The author, I believe, would rather we see the musical half of the worship service handled by people trained or at least very deep and wide as musicians, not by someone who has to force a strumming beat under every song and pitch it in E because he only knows those chord changes. The author cites how in King David's time, thousands of capable musicians were hired to do worship in the temple. And note the term hired, which caused me also to say "Amen!"

The author does not simply say that guitars and drums don't belong in worship, but he does make the point about having the right instrument(s) for the job. Moving the campfire-perfect guitars into a huge church sanctuary where you have to amplified them makes about as much sense as dragging the pipe organ into pastor's living room for some singing during a small group study (don't worry, we'll stuff some rags in the pipes to make it softer).

Upon closing the book, which I read in only two sittings, I took away a strong commitment to play more earnestly and choose better music for Sundays. I also pledged to not just whip off a hymn improvisation because I can, but take care in choosing how to play something and, yes, practicing. I think I heard God say, "Amen!" to that.

This book caused me to be more assured in some of my own thoughts about traditional/contemporary music issues, but also to embark on ways to make my traditional musical offering more worthy of the Master. If changing minds and hearts was the objective of the author, he was successful. To understand why, well, read the book.

Very fair and insightful.

I can't say enough about this book, so I will sum it up as best as I can.

I am a 24-year old worship leader from Florida. I have recently been challenged to think of the words that I sing, and really pray over them. I stumbled upon this book upon Amazon's recommendation, and I've been blessed ever since I opened the front cover. Growing up in the contemporary Christian movement (CCM), I feel like I've missed a lot of history and deep, rich theology. Reading this book (I'm only halfway through) has given me such a meaningful appreciation for the art of what I do every week. So without getting into any details, for the amateur worship leaders, like myself, PLEASE pick up this book and study it. Highlight, underline, circle, and memorize as much as you possibly can. Paul Jones has done an incredible job at explaining such deep history, and making it understandable for an ignorant kid like myself.

Every political activist should read this. Every American should read this.

What suprised me most about this book wasn't the tales of entrenched rascism against Native Americans in the state of South Dakota, it wasn't the screwed up US judicial system, it wasn't the broken treaties or the reservation violence, or the hypocracy it outlined on the sides of the whites and the Native Americans....

WHAT SUPRISED ME MOST WAS THE TRUE HEROS THAT FOUND JAMES WEDDELL FROM ACROSS AN OCEAN AND BUSTED HIM OUT OF JAIL! When no one else cared if he rotted in prison for a crime he didn't commit, a group of Italians from abroad never gave up hope and represented him through thick and thin for the long haul. IT PROVES IT CAN BE DONE BY ANYONE FROM ANYWHERE.

This book has harrowing excerpts from James himself, writing about life in jail, his prison escapes, life on the lam and what it means to be a Native American Warrior today. James Weddell and John "Hurricane" Carter, two storries that should be required knowledge for every lawyer in America.

This is just an outstanding book with in-depth experiences only to be written by a warrior herself, Gloria Mattioni.
Praiseworthy and heroic, Dakota Warrior can inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to strive for justice for themselves and others. Gloria and James together, have shown through their journey together, just how far understanding, compassion and patience can deliver you. In memory of James R. Weddell.

I want to go back and read again..it is a simple and yet powerfully successful and thought provoking book!

This book is not only interesting but also an easy read.
I found out something new about Kevin Costner!..(all good!!)... and I have been introduced to the life of James R. Weddell, a Yanktou Sioux man confronted with corruption and decept within his community, in contemporary South Dakota. Raised with the life ethics of his Yanktou Sioux ancestors, and driven by the spiritual strength and passion that the Lakota of South Dakota are known for, he survives his wrongful incarceration, without becoming a broken man. But there is much more to the story than that, and it has wet my appetite for more information about the realities of American Indian life today.

I enjoyed the structure of the book, with James and Gloria’s voices alternating chapters. Their words, especially James, created an intimacy of experience that I only truly realized when I began to read the last third of the book. This part is written by historian Daniele Bolelli, who very clearly and fluidly provides an overview of the history of the Black Hills of South Dakota, and the Lakota people for whom the Black Hills are their spiritual homeland. This last portion of the book provided the context for me to find deeper meaning in James words and experiences as he had related earlier in the book. I want to go back and read again..it is a simple and yet powerfully successful and thought provoking book!
