impressive book for the variety of topics covered

The subtitle of this book is the best description of what you’d find inside: Great Lighting with Small Flashes: 40 Flash Workshops. Over the course of 290 pages, this book breaks down numerous techniques into digestible chunks – 40 chapters discussion subjects which range from portraits to product photography and macro photography.

What is particularly impressive me about Tilo’s work and this book – the variety in subjects.

Over the course of 290 pages, this book breaks down numerous techniques into digestible chunks – 40 chapters discussion subjects which range from how to light and shoot portraits to product photography and macro photography.

The author concentrates on speedlights and affordable accessories. So the techniques are well within the reach of every photographer.

The material in the book is easily accessible – the techie stuff is also distributed in each chapter as Tips, Tricks and Notes. There are also side-bar articles and In-Depth notes within each Workshop chapter, where topics are discussed on their own. There are also notes on any Photoshop techniques he used in post-processing an image.

For transparency, I should mention that I know the author. I am impressed with his work … which beautifully illustrates this book. I should also mention that I bought my own copy of this book, because I had high expectations of Tilo in this regard.

This book by Tito Gockel begins with what every stobist should know about flash photography. Photographers know that in addition to the subject to be photographed the next most important ingredient is the amount and quality of the light on the subject. The 30 pages of technical back ground is important for the novice as well as the seasoned photographer; therefore, you will find the first thirty pages full of excellent information. There is a list of the equipment the author recommends and a photograph of the equipment and the light modifiers for your strobist flash.
The rest of the 260 pages are divided into 40 flash workshops. Each workshop is designed for the reader to execute and learn a different strobe light technique with instruction, diagram of the camera and strobe set up with sample photos using the set up. The workshops include such diverse subjects as: wide-aperture look in daylight, colored gels rock, nighttime bokeh, extreme macro photography, still life with bounce flash and high speed flash.
Tito also includes nine in depth tutorials such as depth of field, aperture and the pros and cons of TTL flash .
All in all as a visual learner I am impressed with the photos and the set-up illustrations to assist me with the excellent text descriptions of each of the forty workshops in the book.

As a wedding and fashion photographer, I am always looking for an advanced photography books, for example, photographers like Roberto Valenzuela and Neil van Niekerk to improve my photography. I was "Thrilled" and very impressed with Tilo Gockel's book. Tilo's explanations and diagrams on his 40 workshops are very impressive because he making his Awesome photographs just by using speedlites. If you want your photography lighting to go to the next level, get Tilo's book.

Definitely worth it

I looked at a few different study aids for admin law, and chose Gilbert's because it seemed to break down everything into simple terms. I was not disappointed. Not only does it make admin law easy to understand, but it has several charts and tables that clarified murky areas. For example, there was a chart that broke down the difference between rulemaking and adjudication, and one that explained the various levels of deference. It also has many useful exam tips, as well as review questions and a sample exam with detailed answers. Admin law wasn't my favorite subject (let's face it, it's quite boring), but Gilbert's helped me do pretty well.

The Gilbert series is surely the recommended supplement for all types of legal studies, though this particular book is best utilized in an encyclopedic "Cliff's Notes" sort of way. For reference and practice after the fact, this volume probably can't be beat, thanks to its breakdowns of complex topics into easily digestible chunks, and it's essential for advice on studying for exams. Note that I read this book to prepare for an administrative law class in advance, and found this to be an arduous experience due to the book's non-sequential layout and its assumptions of the reader's knowledge of technical terms and precedents. That's not a demerit because reading the book in that fashion is probably not the publisher's intention. However, I am docking the book one star for some aspects of its technical layout. Sometimes those digestible chunks of information are just too quick for comfort, with important statutes and precedent-setting cases being summed up in single anticlimactic sentences. Meanwhile the index is a real problem, especially with its use of annoying section numbers rather than page numbers. Also, the inclusiveness of the index is spotty at best, with many important and heavily-covered items not appearing in the index at all - most notably the 1981 Model State APA, which is all over the text but completely absent from the index. This book contains most of what you'll need for effective administrative law studies, but you may have some real difficulty in finding it. [~doomsdayer520~]

About the Author
Bruce J. Avolio, Ph.D., is the Marion B. Ingersoll Professor and Director of the Center for Leadership & Strategic Thinking in the Michael G. Foster School of Business, University of Washington. Dr. Avolio has a global reputation as a researcher and practitioner through his work on leadership and its development. Over his career, he has published 11 books and over 125 articles on leadership and related areas in a variety of top journals including the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Organizational Behavior & Human Decision Processes, and the Leadership Quarterly. Dr. Avolio is currently on the editorial boards of the Leadership Quarterly, Journal of Applied Psychology, and the Academy of Management Journal. Over the past 20 years, Dr. Avolio has done extensive work with the U.S. Military through contract funding from the Army Research Institute, the Center for the Advanced Professional Military Ethic, and the U.S. Veterans Administration. He is also currently working in the healthcare sector focusing on how strategic change and transformation occurs for positive impact on performance.

Francis J. Yammarino, Ph.D., is SUNY Distinguished Professor of Management and Director of the Center for Leadership Studies at the State University of New York at Binghamton. He was senior editor of the Leadership Quarterly and co-editor of Research in Multi-Level Issues, has served on eight scholarly journal editorial review boards (Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Leadership Quarterly, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Organizational Research Methods, Personnel Psychology, Group & Organization Management, Journal of Leadership & Organization Studies), and is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and the Association for Psychological Sciences. Dr. Yammarino has published 14 books and about 150 journal articles and book chapters; has received several teaching and research awards; and is the recipient of about $3 million in research grants from various public and private organizations. He has been a consultant to numerous organizations including IBM, TRW, Medtronic, Lockheed Martin, the United Way, and the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Department of Education. He has served on numerous committees in the Academy of Management and Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and as an elected Representative-at-Large for the Organizational Behavior and Research Methods Divisions of the Academy of Management. In 2010, Dr. Yammarino received the Distinguished (Eminent) Leadership Scholar Award from the Leadership Quarterly and Academy of Management Network of Leadership Scholars for outstanding career contributions to the study of leadership.

Believable and comprehensive account

I recently read this book, having read many similar books over the last 35 years. It comes across as a very comprehensive and believable account, including his description of Hell, which is reminiscent of other books I have read, where people describe a dark place where there are entities trying to hurt and do abominable things to one another or else deeply mired in despair and suffering.

For example, George Ritchie describes in his book Return from Tomorrow where he sees a plain "apparently still somewhere in the surface of the earth ... jammed with hordes of ghostly incarnate beings... who were locked in what looked like fights to the death, writhing, punching, gouging." He saw this as Hell, yet came to realise that there was something keeping these beings there, "Perhaps ...each creature here had sought out the company of others as pride-and-hate-filled as himself, until together they formed this society of the damned". George Ritchie then came to realise that the "entire unhappy plain was hovered over by beings seemingly made of light"....I clearly saw that not one of these bickering beings on the plain had been abandoned. They were being attended, watched over, ministered to. And the equally observable fact was that none of them knew it".

A similar account is given by Angie Fenimore in her book "Beyond the Darkness" where she describes entering a "plane of darkness" following a suicide attempt where she encountered myriads of people filled with despair. It is while in this plane, that similar to Howard Storm, she became aware of the presence of light and of God once her thoughts turned to Jesus and God. She writes "Why was it that I could see God while the vacant husk of a man next to me could not? Why was I absorbing light and being taught, while he was hunkering down in misery and darkness? I was told that the reason was willingness."

Both the above accounts seem to confirm Howard Storm's experience and I believe that all three books have something to offer folk from a range of religious and spiritual backgrounds, whether coming from a Christian perspective or from a "your thoughts/ focus determines your reality" point of view.

A Near-Death Experience in Paris

Howard Storm's "My Descent into Death" is a compelling read. It will only take you a few hours to read and it has many insights that resonate with biblical teachings. The story begins with Howard Storm in Paris needing immediate surgery to save his life. However it seems that the surgeons were not available to help him and he was left to suffer in great pain until he finally died and experienced the horrors of what seemed like hell.

This hell however did not have fire it was just total darkness where voices told him to follow them as they tried to destroy him. Howard realizes he is in a very bad situation and almost instantly calls on Jesus to save him. This is amazing because he is an atheist.

Miraculously he is taken away from hell into a more heavenly place. While he doesn't describe heaven in detail or hell for that matter what makes this book enjoyable to read is all the questions he asks Jesus and the angels and how they respond. I noticed that most of the answers were similar to those I'd read before in other books. This book states that the only way to heaven is by a belief in Jesus Christ. However this book also states that it doesn't matter which religion you believe in as long as it brings you closer to God. It is obvious that you can believe in Jesus Christ no matter what your religious upbringing. So that was the only thing that made me question this book.

I felt that this book was very intelligently written and it seems that from the time Howard Storm had the near-death experience to the time he wrote the book he had become very familiar with the Bible's teachings. In this way he was able to communicate what he learned in a very fluid fashion. This book is very easy to read and will interest anyone who has questions about the beyond.

Frightening In Its Implications

I found this book to be very interesting. I recommend it to people who are interested in those deeper philosophical questions.

The first few chapters talk about former atheist Howard Storm's unexpected death and the actual experience in that hellish realm. It's very interesting because he still had his senses like sight, hearing, smell, etc.. In fact his senses were much more acute in the spirit world. He was I think experiencing all of this in his spiritual body while his physical body was lying near death in the hospital bed.

Howard felt that the creatures he encountered in that other world had been human beings at one time but they had now evolved into something else. He felt that he had a choice to become one of them and join their gang on a one way journey.

People like Jeffrey Dahmer would appear to be reflections of those creatures in this world. In fact I suspect the true explanations for the behaviour of people like Dahmer will not be found in psychology. It will be found in the spirit world.

The rest of the book tells how God rescued Howard from hell, what he found out during a visit to 'heaven', and how all of this affected his life and thoughts when he got back to the land of the living. When he got back Howard had a much different perspective about life and he was glad to be back. That's what's so frightening about all of this. How close did he come to never making it back ?

Howard's painting on the cover shows the scene where God came and rescued him. There's some other paintings in the book including the sexual assault down in hell.

Or let me clarify Howard felt he only reached the gates of hell as opposed to going into the depths of hell from which point there is probably no chance of return. Or even if someone did return from the depths of hell they would probbaly be insane for the rest of their life.

In fact Howard says he has spent many years trying to forget some of the details of exactly what happened to him down there.

While in heaven Howard was able to ask Christ and the angels many philosophical questions such as why did the two world wars have to happen, 'what about atheism', and many other interesting things.

Since his return Howard has had some strange experiences such as angels appearing to him in the hospital, etc.. Many people probably have these experiences but they don't realize it at first.

Howard suggests that after an eternity in hell the soul can ultimately be 'annihilated' which I guess means the individual would no longer exist. This is consistent with the bible where it says "Fear Him who can destroy the soul in hell.". However Howard doesn't say how long this annihilation process can take.

Atheists don't believe in life after death. Perhaps for them this can become a self fulfulling prophecy if Howard's annihilation idea is true.

Howard Storm was no Jeffrey Dahmer. He was no Hitler. His great sin was only indifference to God and a belief in materialism, success, and self sufficiency. Perhaps this is all that's required for someone to lose their soul. That's the message of this book.
