“A Heart Book contains greater detail than is typically provided in resources given patients by their doctors. In my experience, patients will only ask about and talk about their heart when they are afraid. Fear draws them to search for additional help and perhaps stumble on misinformation. I want to alleviate fear by providing direct answers, based on real evidence, to help patients make better decisions.”

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.”

strong gift for a strong heart
By HeartMan
I just received my 3 copies from Amazon and am GLUEing them to my friends who need a clue on how to take better care of themselves! The 29 questions in the beginning have direct answers - no slogans/jargon just a clear path - and the small, reference book format makes it easy to attach to their foreheads lol. I love my friends (who now have no excuse to ignore their screaming hearts). Thanks to the author!

The Sound of Medieval Song: Ornamentation and Vocal Style According to the Treatises (Oxford Monographs on Music), by Timothy J. McGee

The Sound of Medieval Song is a study of how both scared and secular music were actually sung during the Middle Ages. The source of the information is the actual notation in the early manuscripts as well as statements found in approximately 50 theoretical treatises written between the years 600-1500. The writings describe various singing practices and both desirable and undesirable vocal techniques, providing a fairly accurate picture of how singers approached the music of the period.

Review
`A positive and thought-provoking aspect of McGee's study is its bringing together of so many diverse theoretical sources ... This painstaking collation of extracts, translations and bibliographical information allows the reader to sample and then follow up rare, often hard-to-locate sources: such an arrangement will undoubtedly serve as a valuable resource for students and scholars alike.' Emma Dillon, Journal of the Royal Musical Association, Vol 124, Part 2

`this book contains an important collection of material to which others will add their scholarly ornamentations.' Anthony Pryer, Goldsmith's College, London, TLS, 16/10/98

`McGee's contribution to the continuing research related to the sound, performance, and understanding of medieval song is both relevant and thorough. The numerous charts, tables, and musical examples illustrate and support the author's conclusions. The book presents a strong, basic understanding of the style of singing and ornamentation in the Middle Ages, how it changed over the centuries, and a more general impression of the stylistic differences from one geographic area to another.' Brad Eden, TMR, 02/11/99

The Divine Comedy, Part 1: Hell (Penguin Classics), by Dante Alighieri

The first volume of Dante's Divine Comedy

Guided by the poet Virgil, Dante plunges to the very depths of Hell and embarks on his arduous journey towards God. Together they descend through the nine circles of the underworld and encounter the tormented souls of the damned - from heretics and pagans to gluttons, criminals and seducers - who tell of their sad fates and predict events still to come in Dante’s life. In this first part of his Divine Comedy, Dante fused satire and humour with intellect and soaring passion to create an immortal Christian allegory of mankind’s search for self-knowledge and spiritual enlightenment.

Review
“The English Dante of choice.” –Hugh Kenner

“Exactly what we have waited for these years, a Dante with clarity, eloquence, terror, and profoundly moving depths.” –Robert Fagles, Princeton University

“A marvel of fidelity to the original, of sobriety, and truly, of inspired poetry.” –Henri Peyre, Yale University

From the Back Cover
This story begins in a shadowed forest on Good Friday in the year of our Lord 1300. It proceeds on a journey that, in its intense re-creation of the depths and the heights of human experience, has become the key with which Western civilization has sought to unlock the mystery of its own identity.

About the Author
Dante Alighieri was born in Florence in 1265 and belonged to a noble but impoverished family. He was married when he was around twenty to Gemma Donati and had four children. He met Beatrice, who was to be his muse, in 1274, and when she died in 1290 he sought distraction in philosophy and theology, and wrote La Vita Nuova. He worked on the Divine Comedy from 1308 until near the time of his death in Ravenna in 1321.

Dorothy L. Sayers wrote novels, poetry, and translated Dante for Penguin Classics. She died in 1957.

Barbara Reynolds was Lecturer in Italian at Cambridge University and subsequently Reader in Italian Studies at Nottingham, and Honorary Reader at Warwick. She has written books, both on Italian authors and on Dorothy L. Sayers.

Sayers Meets Dante: Interpreting the Poet's Voice...
By A Customer
This review relates to the volume 1 of Dante Alighieri's
-The Divine Comedy-, Hell; Translated by Dorothy L. Sayers,
Penguin Classics, 1949. 346 pp.
Other reviewers have spoken to the perceived weaknesses
and problems with this particular translation and
volume, with Ms. Sayers' "Introduction" and "Notes."
Perhaps one should be warned before entering its portals,
as constructed by Ms. Sayers, that this is not an "easy"
Hell to assimilate.
Yet, at the beginning of her "Introduction," she presents
the offering in an inviting fashion: "The ideal way of
reading -The Divine Comedy- would be to start at the first
line and go straight through to the end, surrendering to
the vigour of the story-telling and the swift movement
of the verse, and not bothering about any historical
allusions or theological explanatios which do not occur
in the text itself. That is how Dante himself tackles
his subject."
Some readers may not find Ms. Sayers' translation to be
one that lends itself to "swift movement of the verse."
The value here, however, is the wealth of information
provided in both the "Introduction", the Notes, and
in the map drawings which clearly help the mind's eye
understand the "lay-out" of Hell as depicted by Dante.
The value of Ms. Sayer's "Introduction" is its clear
presentation of HER view of Dante, his work, his value,
his meaning, and his emphases.
She concentrates on the Images of Hell and on the Christian
doctrine implicit in the work. This translation is in
keeping with that emphasis, for it is structured,
somewhat restricted, and presents "Dante's" voice
as more attuned to the didactic and lecturing. Even the
voices of the denizens of Hell have the tones of
stern lesson-learning rather than evoking pity for
their failed virtue and blind human proclivities.
The problem with some readers, and some viewers of
Christianity, is trying to reconcile the idea of
stern, unrelenting, eternal Judgment and damnation
for sins with the idea of God's eternal Love, or as
Ms. Sayers translates the second tercet of Dante's
*terza rima* on the lintel of the entrance to Hell:
Justice Moved My Great Maker; God Eternal
Wrought Me: The Power, And The Unsearchably
High Wisdom, And The Primal Love Supernal.
Ms. Sayers will have no human shilly-shallying with
Dante's intent or the purpose of Hell. And that,
though it may appall some readers, is to the good;
for it forces the reader to confront whether or not
he or she accepts or does not the Christian doctrinal
views -- and helps the reader to understand the
serious nature of choosing one's faith and one's
religion, or not.
After each Canto, Ms. Sayers uses the same very
helpful devices for explaining the preceding Canto:
first, she discusses the main Images to be found in
that particular Canto in a very clear, full, doctrinal
way -- and then, she has the numbered notes which
explain allusions and phrases which Dante uses in
the work.
For instance, after Canto I, we find: "The Images.
-The Dark Wood- is the image of Sin or Error -- not so
much of any specific act of sin or intellectual perversion
as of that spiritual condition called "hardness of heart",
in which sinfulness has so taken possession of the soul as
to render it incapable of turning to God, or even knowing
which way to turn." Similarly, after Canto III, we find
this note concerning the phrase "the good of intellect":
"In the -Convivio- Dante quotes Aristotle as saying:
'truth is the good of the intellect'. What the lost souls
have lost is not the intellect itself, which still functions
mechanically, but the -good- of the intellect: i.e., the
knowledge of God, who is Truth."
This is an excellent edition for the scope of Ms. Sayers'
medieval scholarship and doctrinal insights. Though it
may be hard sledding for the tender-hearted. There
have always been several ways of seeing the road to
Hell -- in this version, once one strays from the
straight and narrow, there is only the crooked and
pit-full, not pitiful.
-- Robert Kilgore.

A readable translation with helpful notes and introduction
By Paul M. Dubuc
Having wanted to read Inferno for a long time, I was glad to find Dorothy Sayers' translation since I value her own writing. I'm no scholar, so I can't compare this critically to the numerous other translations available. I just come looking to enjoy reading and understanding great classic literature on occasion. It takes a great deal of background information to appreciate this work. The Divine Comedy can be examined from many different angles: Poetry, allegory, theology, a spiritual journey, a love story. Sayers' introduction and notes, and the diagrams and drawings in this book were a great help to me. Some may argue that the scholarship is a bit dated, but Sayers clearly loved The Divine Comedy and wanted her readers to appreciate it also. The result of her work was a very interesting reading experience for me, better than I expected. I particularly enjoyed the insights she incorporated into the notes from Charles Williams' book, The Figure of Beatrice. (Sayers dedicated her translation of The Divine Comedy to Williams.) The verse might make it a little more difficult to get the meaning until you get used to it, but I think it's worth the effort. Once I found a good reading pace, I didn't find the rhyming forced as some readers have. (It might seem that way if you look for it.) It must be a difficult thing to try to give readers of English the same experience that Dante's Italian readers had and I think that was Dorothy Sayers' goal. She got me interested enough to take seriously her claim that readers of Dante are cheating themselves if they stop after Inferno. On through Purgatory to Paradise ... It must only get better from here.

Poetry even for us monoglots
By arucuan
Let's begin with Dante. Called "the divine poet" (hence the adjective attached to his humbly titled Commedia), it is a difficult moniker to argue with, not because Dante is writing of heaven but because his imagery, his imagination, and his humility are true imitations of the creative activity of God. Dante is a sublime "sub-creator" to use the coinage of JRR Tolkien. If you can read the Commedia and not be moved to tears, one is tempted to doubt your humanity for Dante portrays the race in all its beauty and putridness and denies neither. He neither celebrates mankind's faculties and achievements beyond their due nor fears to recognize the vileness of which humans are capable.

And it is Canticle II, the poet's ascent through Purgatory, which stirs so deeply the soul and inspires the very penitence and hope of purgation which Dante describes there. One need not be a Roman Catholic or ascribe to Purgatory as doctrine in order to recognize and appreciate what Dante has done in describing the landscape of repentance and hope. (Being a Christian may help, but even on this point one suspects that the divine poet may well perform the function of evangelist, as well as exegete, and lead the searching soul to beatific vision of its own.) Clearly his purpose is not merely to describe what sinners of the past are doing in the afterlife to purify their souls for Paradise, but also to inspire his contemporary readers (who are, of course, yet living when the poem is published in 1321) to examine themselves just as the joyful penitents do on the cornices of Mount Purgatory. It is refreshing--a sort of glorious wound, the healing of which leaves one stronger and more whole than he had been before the hurt.

But what of the translation? We who do not (yet) enjoy the privilege of reading the Commedia in Italian must read the poem in translation--and there are plenty to choose from! Given its primacy among the works of Western Literature in the Middle Ages, the poem has been translated by everyone from Dryden and Pope to Allen Mandelbaum and John Ciardi. So first of all, without question one MUST insist on a verse translation! Prose translations can hardly suffice to communicate the rhythm and terseness of Dante's terza rima which is so integral to the poem. Nor can the majesty of the subject, the grandeur of the poet's climb toward Paradise with all its anticipation and awe be fully communicated in a prose rendering. How well various attempts at verse have succeeded in doing so is the big debate.

In this reviewer's humble opinion, Dorothy L Sayers has succeeded to a degree which surpasses any extant English translation. Are there occasional awkwardnesses? Yes. Is the literal meaning of some lines lost from time to time? Yes, but always for the sake of a gain in some other important respect and always with explanation. Sayers' is the only translation of note which manages to render in English the full terza rima rhyme scheme employed by Dante--and even that feat is worth a few awkward passages or archaisms, it seems to me. One feels much closer to the Divine Poet reading Sayers' translation aloud than, say, Ciardi's half-attempted rhymes, lucid as he can often be.

Whatever else you do, read the Commedia--all of it! It is rather unfortunate that it has become common practice to publish the poem in three volumes rather than presenting it as an integrated whole. Though the familiarity of many ends with Inferno, those who press on I suspect will love Purgatorio best (but fortunately one is not forced to choose), and I am confident readers will be well rewarded for reading Sayers' brilliant translation. One would be hard pressed to find a translator who was more passionate about her subject and who labored more lovingly and meticulously over her rendering of this beloved work than Dorothy L Sayers.

Natisha Raynor is a beast with the pen.....
By Tijuana
I loved loved loved this story, that dang Rugga something else and he doesn't deserve Toya. I loved the relationship Rugga && G had as brothers and hopefully they can get that back. The boys mama was the true definition of RACHET, she didn't care what they did as long as she could get money. Poor little G seemed have been dealt a terrible hand. His intentions seemed to be good, all he wanted to do was play ball. Once his leg was broken it kind of broke his spirit as well. I know Rugga was in a relationship with Toya but I wanna see her with G. The two of them really love each other and G will treat her so much better. I was shocked when Kree ran back to Rugga like a little snitch, but he still just a kid his self. Somebody needs to handle Buns asap, why would he wanna shoot up they mama house he begging for trouble. This story had just enough drama to keep me engaged in what was going on. I think Natisha doesn't a great job of balancing out her characters.Overall I enjoyed reading this book and it was very well written. I would recommend everyone to read it, after all we all been In Love with A G before.

When G meets beautiful Toya, he is in awe
By Stefni The Beast Reader
Geranimo known as "G" was a boss. His brother was really the man known on the streets as "Rugga". Big brother was arrogant and believed in money over B's and when he took to G's crush 9Terrin) from school, G know looked at him through a whole different window, When G meets beautiful Toya, he is in awe, but slow moving gives Rugga the chance once again. This time G is not taking this lying down. Entangled in a crazy love affair and the return of an ex, she has more than enough on her plate especially with crazy Rugga and Buns! Once Toya sees Rugga for who he really is and regretting a lot of her past, how will she escape the bad and get with the G? When Buns enlist her help with a situation, how will she handle this especially if Rugga finds out? **part 2, hurry!

Loved it
By Ebie520
I enjoyed this story.. It started out a lil slow but quickly picked up.. I really wish that G would've went harder 2 get Toya in the beginning.. Rugga was the typical man that did dirty and couldn't accept it wen it was dished back out (even tho it was done after she broke up w/ him).. Same goes for Buns.. I can't wait 4 pt 2.. I hope Toya picks the baby up & doesn't let him kno where she lives..

What if there's an easy way to lose weight? What if you don't have to count calories, exercise like a professional athlete, and be hungry all the time?

When he came to America, Philip Green was a skinny international student. Nine years later, the American lifestyle had caught up with him—he was overweight. Everything changed after he discovered oatmeal. He lost 42 pounds on a self-devised oatmeal diet in three months. His diet was so effective that people started to ask him about his quick weight-loss secret. And that's how this book was born. Philip has managed to keep off weight for two years now and counting. The Oatmeal Diet, he says, is not a diet but a healthy way of life.

The health benefits of oats have been known for centuries, and in the last twenty years interest in oats have increased considerably as a healthy superfood. This is the first attempt to create an "official" oatmeal diet, a well-balanced dietary and fitness plan that incorporates oatmeal.

`It's not a diet, it's a lifestyle-- a healthy lifestyle.'
By Grady Harp
Author and health enthusiast Philip Green performed a self-devised and tested experiment in nutritional health. Coming to the US as an international student he moved from the lithe physique to the `all-American' chubby overweight fast food posture in nine years. Unhappy with the new look, he devised a diet that centered on oatmeal - a diet that in three months time allowed him to lose 42 pounds of flab and create a stir among friends who asked his secret. That was the genesis of this book - a short but well written book on Philip Green's Oatmeal Diet.

One aspect that makes Philip's so valuable is his natural way of addressing his readership. He opens with his own history, shares some internet postings that brought him to examine his new found girth, and his Costco discovery of `Coach's Oats', and voila!: `one weekend morning I woke up hungry and I saw the bag of oats on the kitchen counter, unopened. Read the instructions on the back and found this: "Eating oatmeal can help your heart 3 ways! It helps to lower cholesterol, promote healthy arteries, control blood pressure." Some really healthy food, huh? I boiled some water and in no time I had my bowl of oatmeal ready. Found a banana and diced it inside, and then I added some milk. It was so good that I had the same for lunch. Fast forward three months, I'm 37, weigh 198 pounds down from 240, feel like 25 again, have more energy than ever, play basketball with high school students every night, own an entirely new wardrobe (pants size went down from 36 to 34/ 32, shirts from XL to M), and most importantly-- I like myself.' And he informs us that with the Oatmeal Diet we will lose weight while building strength, we sill not feel hungry, we sill not be counting calories, and we will have more energy that ever.

The lesson begins with an excellent nutritionist's view of oats and their benefits (rich in antioxidants, high concentration of protein, lower LDL cholestrol) and moves through the various kinds of oats (steel cut, raw oats, whole oat groats, rolled oats, oat bran, oat flour, etc), defines a healthy diet (recommending the Harvard diet (heavy on vegetables and fruits, whole grains, protein like fish, plant oils, increase fluid intake), and all of this information and considerably more he rolls out in the chapters What's a Healthy Diet, Breakfast or First Meal, Oatmeal Every Day, How Oatmeal Can Help You Lose Weight, Exercise, Simple Lifestyle Changes to Help You Lose Even More Weight with the Oatmeal Diet, Your Complete Oatmeal Diet Plan, and excellent appendices: How to Recognize Wholegrain Foods and Health Benefits of Breakfast. References are provided.

Philip's book is far more than the usual `self-help' type book. This book has substance, is informative, and more important, is encouraging. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, May 15

Solid Diet Strategy, Well Presented
By Cassandra
A lot of us would love to lose weight, but don’t know where to start or how to go about it. As the author of the book notes, weight loss is kind of simple in one respect, but complex in other respects. The Oatmeal Diet is an interesting approach to the challenge of weight loss and the author goes into his approach and its merits very well. There is a decent amount of support for using oatmeal for weight loss and indeed, that is one of the reasons that oatmeal was popular for so long. The diet discussed is one that will work for some people, but not for others, as is the case with pretty much any type of diet. I know from experience that it wouldn’t work for me, partly because oatmeal doesn’t keep me full. Nevertheless, it is still a good diet strategy and the author presents it very well in the book.

Good Content, Potentially Misleading Title
By r. kretz
Being an afficionado for all things art books, I ordered the book on impulse. However, with a slightly misleading title, and the short and rather less than more descriptive 'Book Description', look out for what the book is about, lest you end up discontent.

The book seems to be aimed at two target demographics: people interested in animation history and younger folk working in animation with an overly technical focus to their work.
For both of those interest groups, MacLean does a huge job. The Book is a rather complete course through the history of animation, starting with the earliest moving drawings and including very recent productions like Disney's "Princess and the Frog". If you did not know what kind of work was involved in making drawings move, and eventually make them into feature films, MacLean will present you with a very readable and accessible account of all that.

MacLeans ulterior motive with this is to show the reader what the layout departments' job is: to bridge the gap between the rather general script & storyboard on the one hand, and the specific requirements for the finished film, as well as directions for all the departments in charge of producing the actual film: animators, background artists, camera operators etcetera.

For the reader interested in a glimpse into animation history, this is a valuable insight into how an animated movie comes to be. For the young animator, it serves as a reminder of how important the layout phase is. MacLean seems to see a specific danger for overlooking the importance of layout in a 3d pipeline, where the specific planning of a shot is no longer a necessity to produce its assetts.

The problem I had with the book was that its subtitle, "The Art and Evolution of Animation Layout", can be misleading. For a reader not in the know of what animation layout is, the book gives insight into what animation layout does, and how its history unfolded. For the reader who already knows what layout is, though, "The Art and Evolution" evokes insight into what constitutes good (artful) layout, and how layout quality itself evolved to allow more and more successful moviemaking. For the reader in the know of what animation layout is, the subtitle "the Job and History of Animation Layout" would be a much better description of the books content. When I read "Art and Evolution", i expected a more direct look at the nuts and bolts of actual layout work: the cinematographic decisions themselves, instead of merely getting to know that layout makes cinematography for animation.

That said, a few passages allow for that kind of insight, however it is never the focus of the book. In terms of artwork quantity and quality, the Disney Animation Archive tome on Layout and Backgrounds (naturally) is leaps and bounds beyond this book, because MacLeans's book is not focussed on telling you what good layout is & how it can be achieved, but enlightens the reader what layout does.

Exceptional Quality!
By Robert
As a collector of animation art, I look for books that can add more perspective to the animation process. MacLean's book is one of the finest books I've read in a long time. The book's outstanding content is matched by the exceptional artwork that is featured to support the text. AND the print quality is amazing...! The attention to detail and color control is exceptional! While reading the book, the reader is immediately struck by the complexity of the animation process and the amazing quality of the artwork that is often overlooked. As an owner of 100+ books on animation, I would rank MacLean's book in my Top 5 -- and it is certainly a bargain at this price!

Worth every penny
By louise
Being a character designer i bought this book due to my ever growing curiosity of Animation development - this book has been an investment for my knowledge and it is worth every dime! When i am working on designs during the day i often find myself skipping through the pages of this book - constantly finding inspiration for props etc. If it is handy for character and prop designers, then for layout artist's it must be gold dust....Fraser maclean has pulled out all the stops and any grey hairs that may have sprouted are trophies to his hard work. Great foreword from Pete Doctor also...BUY IT!

My Father's Keeper: Children of Nazi Leaders: An Intimate History of Damage and Denial, by Stephan Lebert, Norbert Lebert

My Father's Keeper is a uniquely illuminating addition to the dark literature of the Nazi era. In 1959 the German journalist Norbert Lebert conducted extensive interviews with the young sons and daughters of prominent Nazis: Rudolf Hess, Martin Bormann, Hermann Goring, Heinrich Himmler, et al. Forty years later, Lebert's son Stephan tracked down these same men and women to find out how they had lived their lives in the shadow of a horrifying heritage. Drawing on both sets of firsthand interviews, this revelatory work of history offers a fascinating, surprising, often disturbing view of modern Germany and Nazism's legacy. .

Engaging and rewarding
By E. A. Montgomery
Unlike many books on this subject, the Leberts do not fall into the ponderous trap of attempting to be definitive or all things to all people. I stumbled across this remarkable book by accident. Posner's book 'Hitler's Children' was interesting, and is a more exhaustive look at the topic, but Lebert's book is somehow more emotional and accessible. Perhaps it is the lighter touch or the fact that it was written by Germans but it stayed in my mind much longer.
Based on a series of articles his father wrote in 1959, the son meets with those who will speak with him and explores his own feelings about his father's role in the war, his identity as a German, and the reaction modern day Germany has to it's war past. While there are tidbits of information (I had no idea there was a charity set up to support former Nazi leaders and staff or that so many of them entered the postwar government so cleanly) the real value of this book is the human one.
How rare it is to find a father and son so willing to face the possiblities of their post-war life having been stunningly different and how refreshing to find them willing to allow that experience had an effect on their interviews. The portraits of the Nazikinder then and now are done with great appeal. This is a subject too emotional to ever truly be objective about, but the willingness of the Lebert's to try and their look at where they fail does thenm credit.
This is a popular history in the best sense of the phrase that will leave you with a great deal to think about regarding modern Germany and the way the world views these heirs. If many of them have seemed to fall into their father's paths, was it inevitable? Is our own denial to the unique challenge they faced culpable? (If understandable). Is the current rise in their views tied to these things? A great read for the casual and a thought provoker for the more involved. This book deserves a wider audience.

Sitting on Hitler's Lap...
By Leslie Reissner
In 1959, a German journalist interviewed the children of a number of leading Nazis and four decades, later, in 2000, his son interviewed them again and the result is this book. It must be hard to be so overshadowed by a parent when the parent had accomplished great things; but to be the child of a mass murderer in control of the machinery of state must be far harder. For many of the children, their exposure to Nazism was not very traumatic. Many were simply too young and only recalled being seated on Herr Hitler's knees or some similar minor incident. Heinrich Himmler's daughter was brought to one of the concentration camps where her father proudly showed off the herb garden.
The aftermath of the war was not very good for these children, who were interrogated with their mothers and held in camps. But in light of what happened to the general German population immediately after the war it is nothing unusual.
The children who agreed to speak to the junior Mr. Lepert (and not all of them did) seem to have led rather undistinguished and quiet lives for the most part. They coped with their unwanted legacy in different ways, some becoming Nazis themselves, others violently rejecting their fathers. It seems in German society that a father should be forgiven by his children, no matter how awful his crimes, crimes that destroyed Germany itself in the end. Of course, Joseph Goebbels, who murdered all his own children in the final waning of the Third Reich, would not be criticized by his grown-up offspring. In the case of Heinrich Himmler's daughter, she spoke to the senior Mr. Lepert about her plans to rehabilitate her father's reputation, a breathtakingly looney proposition. In all the cases, there is a perception that the family man and the Nazi were two completely different people.
The book is not terribly well-written (it is a gruesome English translation) and wretchedly edited to boot, but some of the points it makes are quite striking, particularly those dealing with how victims see events compared to victimizers. But there is a more interesting overarching theme and that is how West Germans have dealt with their past primarily by burying it. On a national and official level, a great deal has been done in the way on atonement but it seems that individuals simply shed this unpleasantness and went on with rebuilding the country. Old Nazi technocrats soon found themselves running ministries again, this time in a democratic state. It is no wonder that Daniel Goldhagen's "Hitler's Willing Executioners," which posited that the average German knew what was going on and consented to it, albeit passively, provoked such controversy in Germany
Some of the Nazi leaders were good fathers and family men, others decidedly less so, but their offspring, come to age in a different world, seem rather small. The postwar pettiness directed towards them is unpleasant. It is not right to judge the children as if they were the fathers but it is hard to be terribly sympathetic to these people. Gudrun Himmler is involved with a mutual-help society of old Nazis and was involved with the NPD, the extremist nationalist party. When the Minister of Youth, Baldur von Schirach, came out of Spandau Prison after twenty years, there was a nice inheritance from a relative in the USA awaiting him. Old Nazis helped to finance his children's education. Martin Bormann's son, who became a Catholic priest for a while, went around Germany speaking on the evil that is within us all and this may be true. The madness, power-lust and brutality of the Nazi leadership is not apparent in its biological heirs. Undistinguished survivors, for the most part, but one has the feeling that the interviews were perhaps too superficial to show more.

Fascinating but badly put together
By Gogol
I thought it was just me when I first read this book and found it so confusing until I had a look through the reviews of several other people to see I was not alone in this.

Perhaps the original German is better written but sadly, this does not do it justice which is a great pity as this had the potential to be a fascinating read.

The book centers around follow up interviews the author made with various children of leading men in the Nazi German government. While some have come to terms with both themselves and their fathers past others have remained bitter to this day while some even continue to support, at least in principle the theories of their father.

Of particular interest were Wolf Rudiger Hess who refused to serve in the army out of protest at his fathers imprisonment while Martin Bormann entered the church and to some extent, found a peace with himself Gurden Himmler and Niklas Frank still suffered from inner battles with themselves on how to reconcile the father with the man that the world has come to know.

Fascinating book but you will have to read it twice not least because the narrative is so damn confusing.
