About the Author
Perry Goldstein is professor of music at Stony Brook University, where he is currently chairman of the Department of Music. He is responsible for all aspects of the undergraduate and graduate musicianship programs and also teaches music composition, theory, and analysis. His teaching has been recognized by Stony Brook University's President's Award for Excellence in Teaching and by the State University of New York's Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. He is the author of Rudiments of Music: A Concise Guide to Music Theory and has written about music for the Library of Congress as well as the New York Times and many other publications. He is an active composer, with nineteen recordings to his credit and performances worldwide.

Edward Smaldone is professor of music at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College and was director of the School of Music from 2002 to 2016. An active composer, he is the recipient of the Goddard Lieberson Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, as well as grants and awards from ASCAP, the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, the Charles Ives Center for the Arts, and the American Music Center. Smaldone's music has been performed by the Munich Radio Orchestra, the Denver Chamber Orchestra, the Memphis Symphony, the EOS Repertoire Orchestra (Beijing), and many other ensembles throughout the United States, Canada, Asia and Europe and is recorded on the Naxos, CRI, New World Records, Ablaze, and Capstone labels. Smaldone has more than thirty years of college teaching experience in the areas of music theory and musicianship.

Review of "A New Approach to Sight Singing"

The authors of this book are simply incredible! It is the greatest tool for sight-reading I have ever seen. There are many things to work on in this book besides reading melodies. This book contains melodies for sight singing, duets, a sing and play section that incorporates piano playing into the sight singing. There is also a glossary of terms and an appendix of frequently used musical signs that can help the beginner or the forgetful musician in training. There are exercises of every variety in this book. Exercises are written in all the major and minor keys, including the harmonic and melodic scales, in the treble, alto, and bass clefs, and there are even exercises that revert to the Greek modes. This book is perfect for all sight singers, from the beginner to the most accomplished musician.

Great book, but older editions better

I bought this book mainly because I was using an older

edition of the book I borrowed from library. Comparing

that to the available literature, I found it extremely

educational and well organized. It is a great book

that takes you slowly through different skills of

sight singing, with plenty of exercises for each one.

The exercises are sorted from easy to more complex

ones. The book is fit for people both singing in

chorus or solo. The rest of the book are exercises

that are more like music pieces (rather than

exercises) and come with piano accompaniment and one

chapter is dedicated to duos.

However to me it seems that this edition is a little

more simplified and less serious than the previous

ones. Also I think for the price you pay, you deserve

a more decent cover than plastic comb (the earlier

editions are hardcover).

For the serious singer

This is a fabulous, progressive book of sight-singing exercises for the serious vocalist. It should be noted that this book will NOT teach you HOW TO sight-sing...it is not a tutorial in that sense. You have to know the basics already, such as recognizing music notation and key signatures. However, the exercises are the best I've found yet as "raw material" for reinforcing the solfege and rhythm aspects of sight-singing. It includes both "contrived" exercises by the authors as well as excerpts from well-known songs and classic literature. Be aware that the site has multiple listings for this book...when purchasing, especially used, make sure you get the 4th edition, because it includes revisions and additional exercises that were not part of previous editions. New, it is pricey, but I purchased a beautiful, used copy here and saved a bundle off the list price. Worth every penny!

Useful if applied with common sense, but dangerous in the wrong hands.

A Fortune magazine article mentioned 3G's acquisition of Heinz and Burger King and 3G's efforts to cut costs. The article covered how 3G fired 90% of R&D department at Burger King, made huge cuts in HR, accounting, and legal departments. Burger King now has a corporate management turnover rate similar to the turnover rate of low wage workers at its fastfood restaurants; this can't be good for long term growth or attracting employees who have mortgages to pay. This book is considered 3G's bible when operating an acquired company, so I figured I had to read the book. The book focuses on cutting costs by any means necessary. The book would be most useful for large corporations that have gotten bloated. At Heinz 3G fired 14 of the 15 executives with full vesting of retirement plans. Cutting luxuries like corporate jets and helicopters make sense. This book also declares war on the company's own employees as necessary evils that need to be cut. Some of the advice is good, but some of it is sleazy and could create long term harm to a business. Step 24: (Declare Freezes and Cuts) Send a letter declaring an across-the board 3% reduction to suppliers. Make sure the letter is from someone high up and intimidating....(after getting the bill) deduct 3% from the bill and say, 'Didn't you read my CEO's letter? Are you trying to get me fired? Step 37 (Accounts Payable) "Never pay a bill until the supplier asks for it at least twice. You'll be surprised: A few suppliers will take as much as two years before they finally get around to asking for their money." Every expense is reviewed as to be cut unless it contributes directly to the bottom line. The problem is how do you value intangible results, such as an accountant who creates a preventative system of checks and balances that prevents the embezzlement of $20M by an employee? Or an HR or attorney who creates preventative measures that prevent a $50M sexual harassment lawsuit? How does a company value such contributions?

A must-read, for your company's and your own survival.

This is a real book, an important one, about real cost-cutting, in a real world. It has been used by many corporate leaders as a "bible" for increasing profits by cutting costs...all company costs that do not actually create a direct profit. That means cutting most of middle management, some senior management, and most employees who do not have direct responsibility for adding daily value to the bottom line. It preaches renegotiating or eliminating vendor contracts on a regular basis. It teaches questioning the value of any consultant or outside service. It is a roadmap for rapid, perhaps severe, cost-cutting to achieve immediate profitability.
This is not a book for the timid. It is not a feel-good book, except for those who enjoy counting their money. It will make most readers feel uncomfortable, perhaps insecure. These are among the important reasons to read the book.
This book was required reading by Sanford Weill and Bob Lipp for all the senior managers of The Travelers Insurance Companies when they engineered the takeover of the ailing company in 1993. It created shock among many of the senior management of the old, established Travelers, but the book prescribed an exact remedy for turning the corporation into a highly profitable company, now a thriving part of CITICORP...one of the great financial corporations in America.
If the reader is a CEO or senior officer, this book is a guaranteed prescription for increasing profitability. If the reader is an employee, at almost any level, this book should be required reading for one's survival. If the reader is a vendor, a consultant, or from an association that provides a service to corporate America, the book should be required reading, because it imparts the knowledge of a real business culture that drives decision-making...and possibly will drive their future relationship with the company.
The book lacks concern for human resources, for many of the people who make up a company's workforce. They can quickly become a drain on profits. Loyalty, human compassion, sense of community, and many human skills are too easily forgotten or deemed insignificant to the bottom line. This is one of the great faults of the book, of its philosophy, and of its short-term prescription for profits. It is why it only deserves four stars, instead of five. It would deserve five stars or more if the author had enough insight to find value in loyalty, human skills (other than direct sales), and the importance of communities or governments (of people) in the ability of a corporation to provide valid and profitable services. In this area, it is deficient.
The book is very simple and easily read in one sitting. It should be required reading by anyone with a serious interest in business...or anyone who has an interest in an important modern business culture, for better or worse, but certainly for profit.

Interesting read which will make you uncomfortable

This book was written almost 20 years ago. A few parts of the author's advice may appear to be dated, but there is enough content to recommend the book. The author distills his advice into 78 steps taking up less than 250 pages. It is a quick read.

In today's highly competitive business environment, it is important to instill a culture of cost consciousness. In the author's opinion every cost is up for grabs and needs to be justified. There is waste in any organization such as too many layers of management, the amount of time spent in meetings, spending on offsite meetings, and unnecessary reports. However when it comes marketing, the author recommends outspending the competition in both good and bad times.

Some parts of the book will likely make readers uncomfortable including the lack of concern for many of the people who make up a company's workforce and certain suggestions for extracting concessions from suppliers. In the latter case some people will question the ethics of his approach. This book is certainly not "If Aristotle Ran General Motors." It is not about pleasing multiple stakeholder groups. It is a no nonsense book about improving the bottom line.

There is no doubt a company can improve the bottom line following the author's advice especially in the first few years. I would be interested in case studies of some of the author's client companies. What has been the longer term impact on their corporate culture, employee turnover and relations with suppliers? How have their top line and bottom line growth fared over time?

In reading this book I had to work to separate the message from the messenger. I was turned off a bit by the author's tone. It is interesting that the author left Kaiser Associates, Inc. in 2000 and set up his own firm which I believe is just a one person operation. I did some research and found an interesting quote from a May 28, 2007 interview with U.S. News and World Report.

"I ran one company [Kaiser, his consulting firm] for 18 years. The company did very, very well, but we hit a wall. If I knew then what I know now, I would still be there, and the company would be 20 times larger. I would come into the office and, by force of my person and bravado, try to move the company by myself. It worked until we had eight offices on five continents. If I had had more humility and been more principled in how I treated other people, I would have built an organization with depth. No CEO is good at everything, but when people perceive you are selfish and greedy, the holes remain exposed and don't get closed. When you have a strong character, people rally behind you in a way that plugs those holes."

If You Have To Take A Class...

I'm using this book in an online class on mass communication and I have to admit that I actually enjoy reading this book.

It covers every area of the media and its a very simple and informative read. 'Simple' used in this context means that I don't have to re-read a paragraph two or three times, just to make sense of what the author is trying to convey.

The chapters are pretty short, and the book has lots of nice, bright pictures (that's my inner child speaking). Each chapter begins with stories about a media personality and that's always interesting. I end up saying "I didn't know that," a lot to myself.

What I really like about the book is that its very up to the moment. It even mentions Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction.

So, if you have to take a class, especially an online class, it's nice to have a textbook that's so user friendly.

Great book for MFC.

This book is the best book for MFC and what it does inside. This is not an introductory book and if you are new to MFC you'd be better served by reading Kruglinki's Programming Visual C++.

The chapters about OLE/COM are excellent

I bought this book because an reviewer mentioned it has a nice coverage of COM/OLE. After reading these chapters (11 to 15), I think this book explained the topic extremely well. Only these chapters are worth the money many times. I has many books, such as Inside OLE, Inside COM, Inside DCOM, Professional MFC with VC5, essential COM, Programming Windows with MFC. But this book explained OLE in a better way. After I read this book, I can quickly understand related topics in other books.

Bring your MFC mastery to a new level!

The difference between this book and Programming Windows with MFC is that while the latter provides a complete reference on how to use MFC, it does not cover much what is going inside MFC. You might ask why should care about how MFC works? If you remember the first time you used MFC, you might remember your astonishment about how quick you could have a working decent application in five minutes just by using the MFC wizard but after that joyful moment, you spent frustrating weeks to figure out how to do add this special feature to your program. Lets face it, the documentation coming with MFC does not tell everything you have to know to fully unleash the power of MFC. The only way to truly understand MFC is to dig in the code (For Star Wars fans, Obi-Wan would say "Use the source, Luke") and this is precisely why Microsoft is providing the MFC source code. MFC source code is huge and might be intimidating at first. This is why having a book to help you in the first steps of your exploration is an excellent idea. Consider having this book as a companion for Programming Windows for MFC. However, this book is not for novices. Only buy it, if you consider yourself good with programming MFC.

Captain Mike Ray has been hanging around aviation forever ... after a stint flying the Grumman S2 Tracker with the US Navy, he got a slot at a major airline where he sat strapped to about every airplane seat they flew for over 30 years. He wound up retiring as Captain on the Boeing 747-400 ... and since then has spent his time trying to tell the kids about just how to do it. Good book for learning to operate the 747-400.

The book has little information on aircraft systems. If you need that for your oral, this is the wrong book.

But, if you want to know who to run the FMS and the airplane, this is a great book. Well-written. Easy to understand and follow.

At $49.95, it's a bit pricey. But, I suppose that's to be expected for a book with a limited market.

Loved it but...

A great story. I really enjoyed reading it but it's a cliffhanger with no guarantee of a second installment. What happened to Gregory's partner Brad? Was he vaporized? Was he beamed away to another alien ship? What happens between Gregory and Zandor? Zandor and Gregory are both pregnant so what do they do? We the readers need answers.
