Chicago, 1895
Mara Madison arrives at her sister’s doorstep after a decade of independent world travel. Having at last discovered the faith her family always modeled, she’s determined to make up for the years she’s spent indulging her own whims.
Her sister Christa instantly recognizes Mara as a potential bride for her husband’s business partner,Benjamin Esherwood. But Mara has pledged herself to perpetual spinsterhood and charity work since no proper mother-in-law would accept her adventurous past. She also suspects her sister’s family governess is already in love with the handsome businessman, and sets out to use her own matchmaking skills to bring the two together.
So begins the matchmaker's match, a contest between the two sisters to see Benjamin happily married.
When her mother joins the matchmaking endeavor by arriving with Mara's first love, Joshua, in tow, Mara's resolve to remain a spinster is further challenged. Could the love that broke her heart and caused her to abandon society be reignited? Or should she surrender to her feelings for the man she's been trying so hard to match to another?

~~ Spinsterhood or marriage? Which is it to be? ~~
By Richard and Liz
The year is 1895 and Mara Madison is 28 years old. She has not seen her sister, Christa, in 12 years. After a very traumatic experience and calling on the Lord for the first time, Mara believes that God is telling her to change the estrangement and come to Chicago to seek forgiveness. Always the "wild" one of the family, Mara has traveled the world having many adventures, thus determining that no man or society will ever deem her good enough so a confirmed spinster she will stay. Will her family notice the change in her?
Benjamin Esherwood is a factory business owner having taken it over from his now deceased father. Christa's husband, Drew, works for him. Trouble is brewing among the general workers though, as they are demanding an 8 hour day for the same pay as the 10 hour day they are currently working.
As Mara gets used to living in high society again, there are naturally some laughs for the reader. When the children, being taught a dye experiment by Mara, splash it on her dress and face, what does she do? Laugh! (A woman after my own heart.) Experience the fun of the unusual introduction between Mara and Benjamin. There is an obvious spark from the beginning but Mara, being a natural matchmaker not to mention self-declared spinster, sees the look Hester, the governess, gives him and starts planning to get them together. HOWEVER Christa, also a matchmaker, is excited to think that Mara has a chance with Benjamin so starts working on that match. Who will win?
Written from both Mara and Benjamin's point of view, this adds an extra and interesting dimension to the story. What will happen when Joshua, Mara's first love as a child, now a widow, shows up?
Mara struggles with the concept of God's grace. Can she really receive "God's unconditional forgiveness, without having to dedicate every waking moment" making amends for the past? Does that mean her future could include marriage?
Written from a definite Christian standpoint, I did not find this book preachy. At 256 pages not too long and not too short. Plenty of time to develop the characters which the author did. Enjoyable read. Thanks, Liz

Fans of Jane Austen's Emma will probably love this book!
By M. Carley
Mara has spent the last 10 years traveling the world alone. She's focused solely on what would please her until she gets extremely sick on a ship. She meets an "angel" named Jackrabbit and decides to turn her life over to God. Now she's in Chicago to try and make things up with her sister. Determined that her life needs to be spent alone to atone for her past, she resists her sister's efforts to match Mara with Benjamin.
Benjamin works with Mara's brother-in-law and is instantly attracted to Mara, but she has some matchmaking plans of her own. Mara has decided the best way to ignore her feelings is to match Benjamin with the governess her sister employs for the children. Unfortunately, this leaves him in the middle of the matchmaking, trying to find time with Mara but being forced to spend time with the governess.
This story reminded me a great deal of Jane Austen's Emma. Mara may have competition for the matchmaking process, but she ignores her feelings for quite a while before admitting to what she feels. It was a cute tale that I thoroughly enjoyed.
